  • Looking to get more certs but not sure on which ones.

I currently have my Tx/NREMT EMT-B cert and by next week I will have my TCFP FF1,FF2, Hazmat OPS. I also have NIMS ICS 100,200,700,800. I know from prior experience that it really just comes down to your exam/pat scores to move on in the process but what other certs will help me out later on?

I have looked at taking the following:

    TCFP Hazmat Tech.
    Marine firefighter 1,2
    ARFF.
    Swift water rescue.

I'm pretty limited on funds at this current time but I've been told that ARFF will certainly be a big help to 1 city i called up but it's limited obviously to departments that have an airport station. I almost have my AAS in Fire Science but that probably won't be much help there. The marine firefighter is a very limited option as I can personally think of only 2 departments that i have them.

I'm pretty open to who ever is hiring at the moment. Industrial,City,County, doesn't really matter to me. Paramedic is on my wish list but i haven't found any programs close to College station for under $1k. I've applied at DOW before and had some success but that was before my certs. Now i'm waiting for them to have an open position again. I check the the TCFP page at-least 6 times a day. Ideally i would love to end up either close to home or down on the coast. I plan on applying to College station next week.

I agree that becoming a medic will shorten the time to gain your badge especially in Texas. Stop spinning your wheels trying to add on certs that won't give you that big advance in gaining your badge. In addition the above get a plan together what it would take to go to medic school. Present it to parents, grandparents and other relatives and friends. I have yet to hear back from one candidate that made the presentation that a relative didn't step up and help make it happen. Not one. Just drop your pride get a plan together and present it. There are also student loans available through some medic schools.

Even with becoming a medic you still have to pass the oral board. I've seen candidates with great credentials including their medic cert and they couldn't present the package. If you can't present the package you will never, ever see a badge!

I'm currently looking for an NFPA 473 cert. It will should be a great course that will give you some more EMS Skills for your resume and complement your Fire Haz Experience. I missed the local course a few months ago, so I'm trying to find an online course.
