I've been looking into different fire academies, especially in New England since I have a lot of family there and I really liked the stuff I saw on the CT Fire Academy. I'm a junior in high school and I'm from Florida and I'm wondering what the application process to get on the academy is for people from out of state. What steps should I be taking right now to get on the CT Fire Academy or really any academy in New England?

I am a retired CT firefighter and now work in Florida as a firefighter . Anyone can go to the CT Fire academy, you just have to enroll and pay for the training. I believe the only problem you may have is providing insurance coverage for injuries. You have to provide proof of this prior to start, usually this is from your employer or Vol. FD. There is no competative exam like many of the academies in Florida. I still have many contacts up there so if I can be of help let me know. -

And once I graduate from the academy am I assigned to a fire department anywhere they need me in CT or how does that work? I'm covered by my parents health insurance until I'm 20 I believe so I don't think that will be a problem. Thanks for your help.Comment

Look for the training calendar on the website and download it. A lot of the information you're looking for is there. You'd be looking to enroll in a recruit class.
Once you graduate you're handed a piece of paper that says you've completed the Recruit Program (which includes FFI/FFIII, HazMat Ops, some NIMS, etc.). Getting a job is up to you.And once I graduate from the academy am I assigned to a fire department anywhere they need me in CT or how does that work?

Yeah I found the 2011 calendar and it was very helpful and answered alot of questions I had. I had thought that in order to get into a state fire academy you are accepted by a fire department but I guess not. As for the insurance thing I'm not positive so you're right I need to talk to my parents and their insurance agent.Comment

Once you graduate from the academy you have to apply to any depts hiring. Most are municipal and have a competative exam for the jobs. Ther are also many volunteer FD's to apply to for experience.

While I'm training in the academy will I have the chance to meet fire chiefs in different departments? Are the instructors affiliated with any fire departments and will my performance in benefit me during the hiring process training besides getting the certifications and becoming a better firefighter?Comment

Your instructors will mostly be actively affiliated with a fire department and you'll probably meet some Chief officers.
As for your performance benefiting you during the hiring process, probably not significantly beyond the benefit of having already completed recruit school. (Which, BTW, doesn't gaurantee you won't have to do it all over again if you're hired.)
