  • Bachelors Degree

So i got into the fire service with my associates, thinking that I would not want to go any higher than a captain. As life progresses and things that were once challenging become day to day, we look for new challenges. I am starting to research getting my bachelors degree and want to know anyones insight into to. Obviously would have to be an online school, so anyone with experience in this please share. looking for info on which schools, cost, time, type of degree (area of study) and what not.

I finished my Bachelors Science online through Columbia Southern University. I have nothing but positive things to say. My degree is in Occupational Safety & Health; concentration Fire Science. The tuition was the same as in-state tuition at a D1 school in WV (Marshall University), but CSU included the books for free. All professors are exceptionally accredited.

It's advertised in Firehouse quite often. Some big city department FF's receive tuition discounts (i.e. FDNY, and I believe Chicago and several other places, as those depts endorse the program).

I have 4 more classes to complete a degree with CSU also. They are very helpful and their online system works well. You'll get out of it what you put into it.

Good info, I was actually looking into this exact thing and coming across this thread has helped the search. Volunteer State in Tennessee also has an online Fire Science program, have yet to compare cost though. Thanks all.

                  APUS online school

You might also look at American Public University. They focus on firefighters, police officers, and military. www.apus.edu. I am just finishing a Masters degree and it has been excellent.

Hey OCFF - I don't have expert advice, as haven't entered a program yet, but I'm also considering getting my degree online at the moment. I found a site with some good info that I've been looking at - http://www.accreditedonlinecolleges.com so that might help you. I think the accredited part is most important, if you don't go to an accredited school, then the degree is slightly worthless. :/

If I were to pick a course of study, I'd pick something along the lines of Emergency Management, Urban Studies with an emphasis on Public Administration, or plain ole' Public Administration itself.

A fire science degree is nice but if you'd studied and prepared yourself for your organization's promotional process, you've likely covered most if not all of what you'd learn in a fire science degree program.

For clarification, that is WEST Texas A&M - not the A&M you are thinking of.

The good part about this program is that is entirely online. Additionally, if you are a TCFP-commissioned Firefighter in Texas, the State pays for this (or any other emergency services-related) degree.

                        Good luck.

That state benefit is HUGE, wish we had something like that. No excuses not to do it.

I earned both my Bachelors and Masters from Cal State Long Beach. The bachelors program was not very strong. In fact, the do not offer it any longer. The masters was through the Center For Public Policy - Public Administration. I would highly recommend it.
