  • Andros Island Bahamas CSC FF Jobs

Alot of people want to know what the pay and work is like out on Andros Island in the Bahamas with AUTEC Fire Rescue. The contract is run by CSC. The shifts are 4 days on 4 days off with occasional overtime work. The pay is hourly but you only get paid for working 13 hours, not the full 24 hrs shift you actually work. You also do not get paid any overtime, it is all straight pay. Accruing vacation and sick pay earned is based on a 13 hour day, not the 24 hours you actually work. You do not get paid extra for extra or higher and in demand certifications except EMT or Paramedic. Average pay here is about $40K a year and it is all tax free. You get you own room that you stay in when not in the station, the housing is across the street from the fire dept. So another words you never sleep in the fire station, you go to your room at the end of the day which is 4:30PM, oh yah shift starts at 8:00AM. After 9:00PM you are off the clock until 8:00AM but during that time you are still on duty but again without pay. On your 4 days off you are off duty and just do whatever but you still have your same room, its yours the entire time your there. So here is the schedule again:

4 days on duty, 4 days off duty, you work 24 hours shifts but get paid for 13 only, all pay is straight pay, there is no overtime pay but there will be overtime work. Shift starts at 8:00AM and you remain in the station until 4:30PM, you only get a 1 hour lunch. After 4:30 PM you can go to your room across the street, you clock out at 9:00PM but you are still on duty and then you clock back in at 8:00AM and repeat until your 4 days shift ends. Average pay is about $40K may a little more but its all tax free.

When in your room while on duty, you respond from your room, we use the radio and pager for call outs. You do not pay for internet, its free and mostly reliable, you get 3 free meals a day at the dinning facility, there are small places to get and buy food on base as well as a small store. You pay your own phone bill at international direct dial rates, the phone service is Bahamian and they just take it out of your pay. You have cable TV with most the regular TV and movie channels, there is always something to watch. The rooms are not bad, about 18' x 20' with a large walkin closet, a kitchen sink, full size refrigerator, microwave, a full bathroom, and in the wall AC units, like a hotel room. In the Fire Dept the shift has 6 people on duty manning the trucks not including higher ups like the Chief or Assistant Chief. The island itself is beautiful. If you love scuba diving and fishing you will like it on Andros island. However this is not like the developed Islands like Nassau, it is very undeveloped and poor, there is not much to do like on Nassau, it is very 3rd world country, but you will not see a more pristine and remote Island. Its is very undeveloped, rugged and full of every bug you can imagine and just about every plant, bush and tree is poisonous. The Bahamians themselves are also very nice people.

How long have you been there? Sounds like it would be okay for a couple years to save money. I couldn't imagine doing 20 30 years in those conditions. Does anyone have family living with them?

Hi, I work at this FD and I can tell you the info is right on. I have been here many years and to answer your question, no this is an unaccompanied tour. Only way to have family here, like a spouse, is for them to also be hired to work here. But with that being said, they can visit for some time but then they must also be gone (off island) for some time. Alot of people on base have friends and family come and visit after going thru some hoops. Again, no, its unaccompanied and yes no doubt its a great place to save money. But many people seem to go elsewhere for more pay in the firefighter contract world. With that being said, I like it here, can't be that bad considering how long most everyone including me, have been here!!

They do have a plane however you will have a low priority and may not fly on or off the Island. Its for customers mainly and higher priority personel. CSC is hiring for a FF position, just go to the link below and search "firefighter" all the info is on that announcement.

Hi, we cover structural, crash, medical, water rescue and recovery, high angle confined space rescue, tower rescue, environment spill response on land and in the water as well as HAZMAT and shipboard firefighting. We have to cover everything imaginable here. We mostly get medical calls and HAZMAT but we also get a good share of fires, these mostly occur in the town nearby, we help the locals with fires (they do not have a fire department or hydrants for that matter) as well has brush fires. Its a somewhat busy place with your average day to day stuff considering all the different things we do, and without getting into to much detail, if you are looking for action, a place to get great fire experience and a busy place, this is not it. Its a military facility, small and due to our fire prevention program, fires as you can imagine are rare on base. We are trained very well, highly skilled in many many things and everyone who works here has been in the fire service elsewhere for many years and we all have alot of "real world" experience from many back grounds. So this place is where people seem to go at the middle or end of their career and when it comes to new firefighters, go somewhere else to gain experience if that is what you want. We do get action but not like a civilian department, again consider that this is a small military facility. We do our daily details and chores, we get training done, there is always training to do, as well as other duties outside of the fire department that always come up, we help the base when it comes to them needing manpower for projects. Thats about it, enough to keep you busy but call volume is low, but think again, small facility, great fire prevention and calls are mostly medical.

I am a career ff/emt and have just applied for an AUTEC opening. My wife is a pharmacist and has applied for an opening there too as a medical inventory specialist. We are encouraged by your posts and think this would be a perfect situation for us. Our ultimate goal was to work in the US until we could afford to retire to a simple life in the Bahamas. This move would expedite our goal in a very positive way.

Does anyone know how many openings they have? And how soon do they want someone?

                    Thanks!

Openings here are very rare, most everyone has been here for years and years. They have only 1 position available and I am sure it will be filled soon by the most qualified, especially those with DoD IFSAC certs, EMT, HAZMAT Tech etc...The Announcement is linked above.

Thanks for the info! This is good insight as to what the position is actually like.

I noticed that this is the second job posting. Last month there was an identical posting which closed. Do you know the reason it opened up again?

                        Thanks,
                        Tim

                          Second Job Posting

The second posting is because people are leaving. They hired for the 1st position by giving it to someone who worked at AUTEC but was not a firefighter. The second and more to follow are because people are leaving AUTEC. Lets just say that low pay isn't the only thing that is low there. You work 24 hrs but only get paid for 13 hrs, its all straight time, no time and a half or time and a quarter, again zero overtime pay but plenty of hours. You accrue sick and vacation pay based on 13 hrs pay but not the actual 24 hrs you worked. The 401K match gets less and less every year as well as any pay raise. Also you are charged for flights too and from the Island now. Not trying to be disgruntled, these are facts and there are more issues however this is not the place for that. So far 4 have left in the last 45 days and there is talk of hiring more and mostly NOT hiring anymore. CSC has way under bid the contract and has asked several times to rebid but that has been turned down. So now its a money pit for CSC and it gets worse year after year and since its a for profit company, someone has to pay for the losses. To bad.

                            Off days

What do most of the FFs do on their days off? Does anyone commute (for instance, fly back to FL for 4 days, then return to Andros)? And, what is the cost to fly?
