Call me skeptical.... but I think this is a politician trolling to get information to use against the FD in his community.
My reasoning?
Anyone in the fire service would know this already!

If you are the big chief and know so little about your own FD that you have to ask these types of questions I suggest you get out of your chair and get back in the game and learn what goes on in your own FD.
By the way you went a long way trolling to get to the point that you want your FF's to spend more time working out.

1) Volunteer Fire Company / Volunteer Hazardous Materials Team
2) No where close to enough on a weekly basis. We probably wash our trucks maybe once a month in the winter maybe less.
3) We have juveniles serving their community service so we have a few of them cleaning the firehouse. There are the select members that will clean different things here and there so that it looks somewhat presentable.
4) We really don't prepare any meals at the firehouse unless we know we will be there for a while on standby or for a meeting. With that, it probably only takes 30 minutes for everything to be done.
5) Most likely less than 1 hour each day. We don't run many calls annually as it is so I don't think we are even close to 1 hour per call.
6) Each member does their own physical fitness. I can say that I spend about 10 minutes or so a day on doing some common workouts like pushups and crunches.
7) I would say lack of physical conditioning leading to heart attack. I think that's NJ's leading cause right now.

Q. How many "Big Chiefs" are as blatantly stupid, inept, ill informed, out of touch, and resort to trolling internet firefighting forums asking stupid questions that they should already have all the answers to?
A. NONE!
It's obvious you're a big something, but Chief is NOT it.

From the looks of the questions, I'm going to say that he is a brand new JUNIOR firefighter on a small department and he is the only junior belonging to that department so they made him the junior chief.

fire fighters cant answer this survey, or they see the point and dont want to admit to it. For the next generation we are in big trouble.

Methinks he's inferring that if we spent as much time doing PT as we did the other stuff, we wouldn't die from heart attacks and strokes....

Excuse us for our blatant disregard for your survey, but guess what? A growing number of us have stopped caring, for better or worse.
We hear about it every day, to the brink of, or even well beyond, desensitization.
"LODD: Heart attack."
"Firefighter LODD: Heart attack."
"Sergeant collapses upon return to quarters, cause of death: Heart attack."
Wanna know why I stopped caring? Because trying to fix the problem for someone else is like leading a dead horse to water and trying to make him drink.
After a few years on this forum, I've come to this conclusion:
If you're overweight, that's your problem, and yours alone. Now: If you truly, truly want to change that, tell me - NO! SHOW ME!- and I'll do whatever I can to help you, if it means getting up at 5 A.M. and going to the gym with a brother who is truly committed to shedding that fat. I'll be the first to say that working out is so much easier when you don't have to work out alone. But don't tease me - don't play games with me. Don't go out and buy all the Nike or Adidas athletic crap and stick with it for about, oh, let's say a week.
I just get tired of all the B.S. concern about how firefighters are overweight and we put up some fake-ass show of sympathy every time it happens. "Oh, dang, another LT. died after arriving back at the station from the call. R.I.P. Mr. so-and-so." Maybe you are angry about it, or maybe it makes you really depressed. But, let's face it - that's about all it ever does. We talk a lot of talk about how we need to lose weight, but nothing more - just the typical clichés.
Maybe, just maybe, a little lightbulb came on in at least one person's head after reading my post that they should begin a workout routine and shed those 60 lbs. of dead weight, but I highly doubt it. And that's why I usually don't respond to this crap anymore.
So, forgive us. Yes, you're damned right, Big Chief. 2008 WILL be another year of needless LODDs. So will 2009, and 2010, and 2065. And we didn't lash out at your post because we don't care. We lashed out because we've cared so much, some of us are frankly burnt out on the topic.
