This wasn't really me... just one of those emails that gets forwarded 10 billion times.

A guy in St. Louis was driving to work on Hwy 144 when he heard a 'pop'! . He thought it sounded like a flat tire, though his ride wasn't affected. After pulling over, checking the tires and finding them intact , he opened the hood to look at the motor. Before the hood was even all the way open he jumped back in shock and knocked his head on the partially opened hood, unable to believe what his eyes were seeing! Nobody was going to believe this! You sure wouldn't have either! Fortunately, a coworker with a camera recognized him along side the road and stopped to see if he could help.

Scroll down and check out the attachment photos to witness for yourself the source of his amazement. Now, this has to be right up there at the top of the list of unusual but verified 'Reasons I was late for work'!

Snake must've crawled in there to keep warm, then ended up barbecued and skinned.

I'm always afraid that one of the neighbor's cats might end up under the hood of my pickup. So, I try to drive really fast and throw any wayward creatures out before they have a chance to explode. Nothing worse than having to pick out cat hairs from the radiator.

when he heard a 'pop'

I heard me that sound while driving once. Back (yep better get yer helmets on! :D ) when I was with the army, during an exercise, we got ordered to lay into a hide for a few hours.

My partner and I figured "Hey this is a good time to warm up some lunch." This translates into, dig into your IMP box and find that raviolli boil in the foil pack and throw it on the muffler cowl of my MLVW (2 1/2 ton for you unintiated LOL) and let it sit for a few minutes. Ya right. Works great in theory. Especially when the SSM comes along and orders you on a DP for the armour squadron. We got about 1/4 mile down the road and yep. POP. We sorta forgot that supper was on the exhaust....... I had raviolli all down the underside of truck  That initiated Lunch Plan B - PPJ!

I have cooked a few meals under the hood of a truck, but your mistake was to use the exhaust manifold. The temps of the exhaust are too high. The proper heat setting can usually be found on the intake manifold or more specifically, near the water pump or thermostat housings. This area will usually stay under the boiling point of water, thereby preventing the unplanned lunch dispersal.. It is advisable to poke a small hole in the can for your first attempt at this cooking technique to observe if the food will boil out. After about 30 minutes without boiling over, you should be safe to leave an unopened can on the engine.. but do use caution, and be aware that this is not a safe method for the untrained chefs..

As far as things popping under the hood, if you have squirrels around, sometimes they will store acorns and nuts under the hood of cars that stay parked for extended periods. Then, when you do go somewhere in the car, you hear the popping of the nuts as they roast over the exhaust.. Somewhere else in these threads is a whole series of Squirrel stories about squirrels burning cars to the ground..

When the truck is shut down, the manifold method works great. Its when you have to start up and go somewhere that the plan goes to hell. Which is exactly what happened. We had stopped with the intent to be parked for a few hours, when we got orders to make an independant move. By the time we got all the camm gear off the truck, we sorta forgot about lunch....... So when the motor started up "POP" went the packets..............

UGH! My years of cooking on a duece n 1/2 are (thankfully) long over. That was actually one of the things we spent 3 days on in MOS training.:p

We have two 5 tons in our fire department, one for a tanker, one for a brush truck. (Retired military trucks on loan from MS Forestry Commission.) The Duece-n-Half was too small to handle the weights we wanted to carry..

I've never tried cooking on their engines, but I guess if we had a busy day....and I had some Spaghetti-O's....
I've got about 5 1/2 hours driving one when we went to pick it up.. Thank God I have a Walkman with ear plugs.. Although the Canvas roof leaked a little, it was a better ride than I had expected.. Still, it was a far cry from my other truck....

Of course, my other truck is twelve years old, but it does have A/C, AM/FM/CD, power steering, cruise control, air ride seats-cab-suspension, and noise insulation.. plus a real bed!

But if you ever get it off road, it becomes an anchor in mud..

I have cooked several meals in this truck, but mostly on a 12volt oven, or 12 volt pot, and also a heater bag that I've got that works great on canned food.

I thought it was Army for "Hey y'all!Watch this!".I've known Navy Viet Nam vets whod' been in PBRs that told me about heating C rat cans on the boat's exhaust.
Though the boat I currently work on has a microwave in the galley(2.5 mil.it better be equipped),in the winter months,I'd sometime heat cans of food on the Cat manifolds. The youngest guy in the crew isn't even 20 and he's hever heard of that technique.he'd keep taking my dinner off the "stove" and I'd keep getting hacked and hollering at him as I returned it to where I had it.

I guess you couldn't find a McDonalds? They're everywhere you turn around.

Key word...CAT manifolds. Most of the Cats I've seen and worked on had water cooled manifolds so they wouldn't get as hot as a non-cooled manifold.

When I was in Boy Scouts (many years ago) one of our guys put an un-opened can of Beenie-Weenies on a cooking grate over a hot fire. He walked away, doing something else to pass time while his lunch cooked. Several minutes later we heard the explosion, and turning to look, saw the can doing flips about ten feet in the air. It was horrible. Beenie-Weenies were spread all over the trees, and campground.

I was on my way to work one morning, but stopped when I saw my friend's sister on the side of the road with a flat tire. She had opened her trunk and was getting out the jack and spare. I helped her change the tire, and as I was pulling the flat tire off, we watched her BROTHER pass by, never stopping to help. I guess he didn't want to be late to work..
