For a while at least, I have torn my ACL again, had the surgery last wednesday and am now surfing the parents couch for the next week. Any tips on how to not go crazy because I cant respond? I am talking with my officers to see if there is something I can do to stay involved. Bah! I finally get with a good department and look what happens! Oh well, stay safe guys!

I've been down since September with a torn ACL, PCL, miniscus, crushed cartilage, fractured femur, and fractured tibial plate. Surgery was in November. I have seen every episode of Spongebob Squarepants...twice.I am a master crossword puzzle bungler, and the flood in Halo fears the first person shooter ground I walk upon. I can recite every line from The Godfather, and GodfatherII verbatim, even the Italian parts. I grew a beard, the first one ever, and it had grey hair in it. I keep in touch with some of the guys and cry inside a little every time the engine goes by my house with the siren blaring. (I think those a-holes know exactly what they're doing to me) But I keep myself going knowing that I'm gonna OWN overtime when I get back in May!
Good luck! and ice, ice, ice!:)

Hah I have watched just about every movie on HBO ten times now, and I practically live on World of Warcraft. I definately would grow my beard back but I think the girlfriend would disown me, cant have that, cant be single AND have a bum leg! Luckily I am only a volunteer so I have work to distract me, but it still sucks, especially since we just got an awesome new rescue truck! I am hoping I can do administrative stuff for them. How did you end up destroying your knee? I tore mine at a fire call, didnt even realize I had torn it, thought I just sprained it. I had torn the same one 7 years ago, so this time the graft tore and there was no nerve endings in it. Oh well, heres to hoping my physical therapist is cute! Good luck with your recovery.

The novelty of being IOD wears off after a little over a week... been there, done that...
Go the firehouse and hang out... offer to file paperwork, go to drills for the credit, work on putting together a training program for building recognition, etc.
Stay busy...

How did you end up destroying your knee? .
Well I'd love to tell you that I did it making a heroic grab for the little helpless child in the raging inferno. Buuuut I can't.
The front tire washed out on my dirt bike at about 45mph.:o
The worst part of the whole thing is that I had a new set of tires leaning against the bike and I moved them so I could load it. I'm a real dumba$$.:D
I wish it was an IOD Gonz. The upshot is that I had about 9 months of SL banked. I did the math, when I return it'll take me 4 1/2 years to build it back to where it was.

I copped an injury on the job a couple of years back - and yes, the pain of hearing the sirens go past when you can't respond.
Mine was a weird one. Dragging hose up very steep terrain, properly, there were three of us heaving in unison. Ruptured a thing called a 'bursa' in the elbow? It became infected; hospital on an antibiotic drip; operation; then they tell me I was lucky, they thought they may have had to amputate my right arm! Sheesh - glad they didn't tell me until after it started coming good! Seven weeks off work, then back - but wait, I found I couldn't drive; nerve damage. Taxi to and from work, $85 each way, because my manager wouldn't OK me to work from an office near home. Then they advise me that the nerve damage may never recover. Any guesses as to how low my morale was by this stage? Manager started complaining about productivity issues with me - while I was on medical restrictions. Down goes my mental health even further. Another seven weeks off - but I cut loose and resigned, I'd had enough of that place! Would you believe that I was working for the fire authority for which I'm a volunteer firie? The manager is a piece of scum, the rest of them were great. But I made it an early retirement and am healthy and turning out again with a clean bill of health! Recovered!!! Thankfully the Authority paid everything, hospital, doctors, taxi, wages, the lot.
The moral of all this waffle? Keep as busy as you can, go down for training (if possible) and you'll get back there in the BRT's.

Glad to hear that you are all better. Little story..... 7 years ago I tore the same ACL, at the time I was a climbing instructor at a local climbing gym. Now I used to climb everyday, at any rate I screwed up a small thing, sold a pair of climbing shoes on sale when they werent on sale. So my boss pulls me aside and tells me he is letting me go, that I have screwed up too much, then he says.. get this.... "You seem to have lost your passion for climbing" I took all the self control I had not to smack him, instead I told him that theres a difference between losing my passion and not being able to do it! Oh was I mad! And the kicker was, I hadnt been screwing anything up, what the real deal was, having someone limp around was bad for business. Oh well, thats life eh? Best thing that ever happaned to me though leaving that place.
