My Brother is thinking of getting a Firefighting job in the US. He has been a Firefighter in Canada for the past 7 years. I told him that it is not as easy as it may appear. Here in Atlantic Canada, firefighters just don't get laid off, but i hear that it happens in certain parts of the US. He's looking at the northeastern
states Mass. Conn. New Hampshire.
I don't want to discourage him but i'm afraid at 40 years old, him leaving a secure job here for a maybe in the US.
Plus, can a non-american apply and get a FF job in the US?

Any advice would be welcomed, cause i plan on printing this off and giving him a copy.

Thanks

Many career departments in Massachusetts are Civil Service. You have to take a statewide entrrnce exam and CPAT, along eith e communities' physicals and psych exams. Some communities have no age restrictions, others do; for example, the cutoff age is 32 for my FD.

Most communities favor residents of the community, some FD's it is required that you have residency and maintain it.

As far as resident aliens, I have no idea.

I work with a guy that's a Canadian citizen. He's worked for us for around 20 years and I think he's a resident alien. Your brother should look into work and residency requirements with the INS.
