Chicago Bridges Going Up

Posted for no particular reason except that I think the bridges are cool. They do have a fire department tie in though. When it's really hot, once the bridges go up, they occasionally swell and won't go completely down. They call out engine companies and the boat to deck gun the bridge decks to cool them off and shink them to get them to close. Like I said - I just think the bridges are cool.

I only know of a couple of draw bridges around these parts that are similar to those in the windy city.

Hamilton Avenue Bridge over the Gowanus Canal bridge accross from Engine 279 Ladder 131 and the Mill Basin Bridge on the Belt Parkway.

Both create a royal pain in the azz when they are raised for marine traffic!

Very interesting. Are your districts set up to avoid drawbriges? Or do you find yourself waiting for one while someone else beats you in.

They are only scheduled to open a few (20) times at the beginning and (20)end of the summer. Any unscheduled openings are rare and would be for some special river traffic. Heres the Apr, May, and June schedule from 2007. It would be similar for the end of summer months. As far as I remember (I don't own a sail boat ;) ) they open sequentially as traffic moves along so that you can get around by going a few blocks out of you way.

Ive crossed the one on E 100th more times than I can count. I pick up feed at the Cargill plant in Hammond and cut back through the city and jump on 57 to get back to 80. Where is your house located at chicago? Ive been by a couple up in that area

I don't head south too often - well not past Bridgeport or Canaryville anyway!
