When performing your search, do you carry both items? Have a sling on the can?
I am trying go get this position placed in service, but we are having some difficulty with the bulkyness of the can, and 6ft hook.
Ideas, suggestions, bring em on!

And if you dont like searching with a can, can it!

Sling on the can really helps you move faster in a search.

I take it you're not making the can man take a halligan as well? Some of our ffers do and some don't, but they all take the can and a 6' hook.

Take an old seatbelt, run it through the top 'hook' on the can then get some 1/8 inch screws use an awl to get through the seatbelt, get four washers and nuts, that attach it up top, on the bottom, drill two holes and do the same thing.

The canman searching with the can should be primarily searching for the fire location anyway (thats the point of having the can with you). Once the fire is located, it is either used to extinguish a small fire (mattress etc...) or confine the fire. A hook may also be needed to reach into the fire room and close the door (confine the fire). Until the line in place and operating on the fire, the canman should not be leaving this position. His job at this point is to continue to confine the fire, useing the can and to monitor the fire conditions while the other truck company members conduct a primary search. He has to notify the members searching if the conditions are worsening, he is out of water, or the engine is having trouble getting water on the fire. Once the engine is moving in and getting water on it....he can then help in the searches. At this point the can is a good tool for taking windows. He can use the base of the can to take the glass as he searches.

So to answer your question....take a can and a hook (if your goal is to operate specifically as a canman should). The only thing the strap is gonna do is make it easier to carry into the building or drag it down a hallway.

When searching bedrooms off a hallway, leave the can at the door. Search the room, grab the can, go to the next bedroom, leave the can, search, etc.
