I read about a fire academy thats open to people that are NOT firefighters in Arizona. Only problem is that I'm in NY!
I'm looking for a fire academy thats open to the public, a place where people other then firefighters can go and be trained as firefighters.
Anyone know of a place in NY or near NY? A certificate program?
Anything?
Anything other than fire science.

Well. Your gonna have to become a volunteer firefighter if your not already. Corning Community College offers a Certificate and Associates Degree program in Fire Protection Technology. All fire classes are held right at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls. Here is the list of required classes.
Introduction to Fire Science
Firefighter 1
Firefighter 2
Emergency Vehicle Operations
Pump Operator Course
Truck Company Operations
Accident Victim Extrication Training
Firefighter Survival
Firefighter Assist and Search Team(FAST)
Rescue Technician:Basic
Incident Command System
Fire Behavior and Arson Awareness
Principles of Fire investigation
Principles of Building Construction: Combustible
Principles of Building Construction: Non-Combustible
Code Enforcement
Certified First Responder
Then Electives
It may just be an Associates Degree Program, im not exactly sure. I will be starting the program next fall plus the Paramedic program.
There are a ton of electives to choose from. With the Fire Classes you can pretty much take as much time as you want to complete the program. Some classes are offered multiple times a year. So you can choose when you want to take it.
For Students enrolled in this program. There is also a bunk in program at the Montour Falls Fire Department(which idk if im in yet but im sure i will be im still trying to get a hold of the chief). There you stay at a house in montour falls and do 15 hours of station duty a week. Its cheaper than staying in an apartment b/c there is no on campus housing and you get more experience.

There is also a college in Jersey City called NJCU. They have the only fire science program in the state, and I am going to be attending next semester.

That's not the only school that offers Fire Science in New Jersey. my community college (Ocean County College) offers an Applied Associates Degree in Fire Science, but it's an Applied Associates so it may not transfer to another college if wanted. It does offer it, though.
University of Maryland and John Jay University in New York offer Fire Science programs that I know of. My Chief told me another school, but I forget the name. I believe it's one in New Jersey. It may be the one posted above. I'm not exactly positive.
But, if you're looking for a Fire Academy and not a school, if you are a member of a volunteer fire department then the department will most likely pay for you to attend the counties Fire Academy Course to be certified in Firefighter Level 1.

Oh wow didn't know that. I know that they may have been the first university to actually do it or something to that effect.

Yeah, that may be what they did. I only know this because I am debating whether or not I want to do the Applied Associates Degree in Fire Science at my community college or go somewhere else.

If it helps, I hear that the one at NJCU is really good. They have some top notch people there teaching, and even people from JCFD take classes there.

Yeah, that definitely helps. I'd much rather take a fellow firefighter's word on it over any advertisement that they run.

The big deal with NJCU is that they offer a Bachelor's degree as opposed to an Associates.

And that is an important distinction. They are the only college in NJ that does offer the BS in Fire Science.

Check out Monroe Community College here in Rochester, NY. They not only offer a Fire Protection Technology degree program, but they also operate a fantastic state of the art fire academy (Public Safety Training Facility).

Well, to get a good job, a BA would definitely be required.

Indeed it would be. A lot of the firefighters that I talk to, say that they learned a few things by taking the courses at NJCU.
