Ok guys i am looking for some help. I went to take my PFT to get cleared to wear a respirator and i couldnt pass. I was 50% of predicted, which i know is not good. So as a result i am going on 5 and a half days without a cigarette. I have a couple months before i must take the test again.
So no the question... Is there anything i can do besides cardio and fluids to try to regain some of lung capacity back?

At 50% you should make an appointment with a pulmonologist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulmonology). Not to get you upset but that value is something to be concerned about. That's if the test was performed correctly. If you were not instructed (coached) properly, it can give you a poor result. Technique has a lot to do with it. If the machine was not calibrated or your height and weight were entered incorrectly that can effect the outcome, too. Regardless, keep up with the no-smoking and see an MD for follow-up. From what I see from the info you posted, it appears that you have more at stake than just the FD.
BTW, I have lung issues. My spirometry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirometry) has been borderline for years, in the low 70's. I never did anything about it until recently and was dx'd with chronic asthma.
I wish you well.

FDAIC... thanks for the info. I have been wanting to make an appointment with someone. Withing the last few days i have noticed that if i attempt to take a deep breath it will feel like my throat tightens up and then chest. No other problem except for a stuffed nose that has been chronic for approx. 4 years now.
But thanks for the info i figured there was something more than smoking going on.

Well after a visit to an urgent care center today because i was having severe shortness of breath and quite a few other problems i was diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis. So hopefully i am on the correct path to get better and past this PFT and get cleared to wear a SCBA.
Thanks for all the help. It means a lot.
