Wonder why the emergency alert didn't give an appropriate alarm?

Mom, Daughter Trapped In Elevator 2 Days. Women Only Had Two Cough Drops, Six Aspirin

NILES, Ill. -- Two cough drops and six aspirin.

That's what two cleaning women survived on during two days trapped in an elevator in suburban Chicago.

The mother and daughter got stuck in the elevator on Dec. 22. They didn't have a cell phone and the building wasn't supposed to open until after Christmas.

No one responded to an emergency alarm and the women couldn't pry open the doors.

They slept on their coats and used one corner of the elevator as a bathroom until Christmas Eve, when an employee of the building happened to come in to work.

He heard the women and called for a rescue crew.

The younger woman says the moral of the story is, "Always take your cell phone with you."

Wondering if a cell phone would have helped in an elevator -- if it's in the center of the building, I would think not, or not so well...

The other question is that no one missed them for 2 days?

Depending on the local regs, the alarm buttons in the elevator do not necessarily have to ring to any central location. They are often just a siren on the roof of the car that rings loud enough to be heard outside the shaft.

The phone should have rung somewhere, but if there was no one at the security/reception desk, I guess they could be missed too.
