Hi, I'm 19 years old and I live in Hopkins MN. I have recently decided I want to become a Vollie FF. I have no experience at all and I'm wondering what I can do to get started. Do i need to have any experience to become a Vol?

Yeah, you have to know that light bars on a vollie car violate man law.

Since when? I guess it would be true for some cars....but trucks, specifically black or red look fine. But whatever.

And to answer the real question. No you don't need any experience, usually, but they will want you to attend training so you can actually do something. That is the big thing you should know.

I joined a volunteer fire dept. not to long ago with no expierence at all. I have been on two and a half months and learned a lot by just going up there with a friend that has been there for about a year. He showed me where all the tools and equipment that we had on the engine, and what each was used for. He also did that for me on our squad. Also there are fire academies that you can go to and get a lot of expierence. You will learn a lot if you really want to.

Glad to hear you want to join your FD! I joined the FD back in August with no experience either. Since then, I've been able to learn about most of the equipment, procedures for different scenarios, etc. just by attending the trainings and just about every call possible. I've also learned quite a bit by asking questions of the experienced FF's as well. I hope everything goes well for ya!

No experience required.I do advise you to ask questions, and take copious notes during training for future reference.Whenever a work detail is called, show up and help inventory the rigs. That's the best way that I know of to learn what gets put where and why it goes there.
Don't worry if they don't let you put out a fire the first night you join.Thank God (or any Diety you choose) if they don't.Good departments will train you in the basics first before handing you a hose, turnouts and telling you to have at it.

Hopkins fire is a good department, I got my fire science degree through Hennepin tech, a lot of the teachers there were Hopkins firefighters. Good Luck.
