I was just curious... I am not a smoker, but will affect both city FD's and protections districts? Just curious if it does... thanks.

Yep. Our attorney says so. And we have all the signs on the doors and building now to prove it...

Hey you see the other new law? It's pretty neat... now FPD's have a voice in un-inc!

Fire Protection (SB 1508/P.A. 95-0512) – Allows Fire Protection Districts to enforce building code ordinances in unincorporated areas of counties with approval of the County Board.

The Chief put the memo out yesterday about No smoking in any of the stations. Can't wait to here the complaints about people still being able to chew!

Yes, the new law affects all public facilities in the state. Our city employees were recently required to attend an infomational session on the new law. It's the 15 foot rule from any doors or windows, but you can smoke in your car. Now I don't smoke, but what if, and I mean WHAT IF, you had the window of your car cracked and the wind was blowing it the right direction, and it went into a vent for the furnace, then it filled the building, you inhale a little smoke, and you develop lung cancer 20 years later? Hmm.......I'll just enjoy hanging out across the border in Iowa at a bar on a day off, being subjected to the same old smoke! Another question is who is gonna paint all of those lines with bright orange 15 feet from any windows and doors? Ha Ha! We already respond to burn complaints for leaves, now who gets sent to a smoker by a window?

My opinion is that this is a good thing to take effect, but how do you enforce such a law when cops are overworked and can't find time to fix the real crime?

Most of the guys who smoked have now quit (myself included) because they can't smoke inside and its too freakin cold/hot/windy/rainy/humid/dry/sunny/dark/whatever to go outside to smoke. Its affected us, but in a GOOD way for once.

I'm still waiting to see who is going to be the no smoking police! Every news article they are talking to the local health departments...so I guess they are going to run around and issue the citations?

Actually a individual can file a complaint (not sure who with, ya know the cops won't wanna handle that). the other issue is going to be the places being compliant. in order to be compliant signs must be posted. I am sure people will try to smoke where signs are not posted and blame non-compliance

from the way it was explained to me yesterday, no one can smoke in vehicles that are own by the city, town, village, etc even. That includes cops smoking in pd cars.
