hey you should always stand above it so that way the shavings or the stuff from you cutting it does not get into your eyes

Actually you should be wearing SCBA while doing roof cuts so getting it in your eye should not be an issue. You should be cutting from a roof ladder which would put you cutting to your side, either left or right. If you are on a flat roof, or you have control over you location on a pitched roof you should be on the windward side of your cuts, whereever that may be.
