Howdy all,
i was wondering if wearing Under Armour gear is a good idea under turnouts in a structure fire situation.

i figure for medicals, TCs etc no problem, but in a house fire???
Our SOP is cotton under structure gear so i am figuring that even with a T-shirt over the top of the Under Armour its not such a good idea.

this is my first winter,

thanks

No go on it. From everything I have read and heard, that stuff will melt to you. I live in the Northeast and usually just wear a log sleeve shirt with a short sleeve shirt on top for warmth.

Man, I would think a LOG sleeve shirt would be pretty combustible too!!!!!!

Sorry, had to do it.

Not all under armour shirts are created equal. They have shirts available to warm weather that are flame retardant... made from Nomex. I'm not sure if they made any flame retardant clothing that are for cold weather yet.

The shirts cost a pretty penny, about $100 each for the warm weather, long sleeve shirts.

Think about it...If you're exposed to enough heat to melt your clothing under your gear, you have much bigger problems.

Try Ice breaker themals. New Zealand Made, merino wool. Nautrally flame resistant, warm when wet and the best part is they don't stink up onyou when u work up a sweat!. No Joking we had a guy wear a single set 4 3 weeks while snowshoeing with a 130 pound pack and they only just started holding a smell at the end of 3 weeks.

I have worn a 3/4 lenghth set under turnouts at a couple of jobs, warm as toast u just gotta watch te hydration factor.

By the look of the cost for under armour you'll probably end up spending about the same

I wear underarmor to keep from screwing up my shirts with my deoderant. I reckon unless the melting point of the fabric is far lower than the burning point of your skin, it doesn't matter. And if it's that low, then it won't hurt you when it melts, anyway because the melted under armor will be a lower temperature than that which hurts your skin. You'll just have to let it slough off as you shed skin, or maybe scrape it off with some steel wool.

yeah...you'll be fine. If that much heat gets through your gear, then you have more problems...but don't worry, the burn center will peel all of the melted stuff off of you.
