I have had no luck looking for bulk lots of used BLACK helmets in the 660 variety style, or anything similar. (No Phoenix Please) I have looked all over EBAY and Googled till my fingers bled. I need about 12-18 immediately. No need for eye shields; we still have access to Goggles. These would be for the newest guys who have a lot of learning to do before they get nozzle time. If they are missing all the webbing and the neck guard, that would be more we would have to buy, so I really need that part intact. So as long as they are functional, intact, I can use 'em. Thank You for any leads you provide and/or your time for reading this! God Bless! Sgt Patrick McDonald

. Currently, our apparatus are the priority for funding. [/email]
I see where your coming from in regards to being tight on money but in my opinion, PPE should be the priority of your funding not apparatus.
I know you said you need these helmets as fast as possible but in the future look into grants. They are for this exact reason.

That was my first thought as well. Adequate PPE comes before apparatus.

Point taken on previous 2 posts. The surge in recruitment we have experienced this year rivals that of the previous 5 years combined. This was unforeseen. The situation remains; we need the helmets, and are "willing to pay" as the origional post said. Finding a source is the focus of this post. Thank You.:D

Perhaps you can contact some of the individual stations in "PG COUNTY MARYLAND". They seem to always have large caches of "extras" in their closets, or attics. Stuff that they can't use because the county provides all the gear for them.
I'm sure HWoods will see this and chime in. :D

While at the Fire Expo in Harrisburg last year, I remember a booth that had boxes of used 1010s from DC. It was hilarious to see all the whackers drooling over the ones that were burned up. Even overheard one talking about how cool he would look wearing it.
But I digress.......I can't say for sure, but I believe it might have been the booth for Maryland Fire Equipment (1-800-492-1400). If someone else happens to remember something different, chime in. Good luck in your hunt.

While I understand staffing is a great problem to have, do you think that you might want to slow down on the recruitment until you can provide everyone with adequate PPE? Maybe do it once or twice a year.

Okay.
Buy 12-18 new black helmets (as little as $2000-$2500).
Issue the new helmets to your most active firefighters who need them the most.
Give the older, fully compliant helmets you collected from your most active firefighers to your new recuits.
Nobody gets issued a non-compliant helmet.
