I am writing an Essay on the comparative properties of non-CAFS foam and water on the classes of fire. The paper is roughly 10 pages in length. I am looking for sources of primary research (i.e. scientific studies, manufacturer's data). Does anybody know sources where I might find such information?

Thanks Alot

Charlie

No,

AFFF is s type of foam concentrate, it can be applied through a NAFS (Naturally aspirated) or CAFS (compressed air) system.

There are many types of foam concentrates, Class A, Class B, Alcohol Resistant Class B etc... CAFS or NAFS is simply how any of the above concentrates are mixed with water and applied. With NAFS the air and hence the bubbles are introduced at the nozzle usually via the venturi principle, these are low energy systems and generally have less stream reach (as some of the streams energy was used to help introduce the air). NAFS is very inexpensive and fairly simple. With CAFS compressed air is introduced at the pump and the foam is completed as it mixes and passes through the hoseline, nothing is done at the nozzle, all you need is a shutoff, no nozzle. CAFS is a high energy system as the air bubble expands as its released from the shutoff and helps produce more stream reach... CAFS is also a significantly more expensive system.

Charlie,

You can find some reports at

www.fireflex.com

under compressed air foam systems/downloads...reports

Some other good books to get information about foam and foam systems are the IFSTA Pumper Driver/Operator, IFSTA ARFF Driver/Operator, and IFSTA ARFF (Airport Rescue Fire Fighter) books and if i remember correctly, the Essentials IV book has a good section on foam..

hope to have been some help!
