Move over, Dr. Phil, there's a new relationship expert in town.

He's Saudi author and cleric, "Dr." Muhammad Al-'Arifi, who in a remarkable segment broadcast on Saudi and Kuwaiti television in September, counseled young Muslim men on how to treat their wives.

"Admonish them – once, twice, three times, four times, ten times," he advised. "If this doesn't help, refuse to share their beds."

And if that doesn't work?

"Beat them," one of his three young advisees responded.

"That's right," Al-'Arifi said.

He goes on to calmly explain to the young men that hitting their future wives in the face is a no-no.

"Beating in the face is forbidden, even when it comes to animals," he explained. "Even if you want your camel or donkey to start walking, you are not allowed to beat it in the face. If this is true for animals, it is all the more true when it comes to humans. So beatings should be light and not in the face."

His final words of wisdom?

"Woman, it has gone too far. I can't bear it anymore," he tells the men to tell their wives. "If he beats her, the beatings must be light and must not make her face ugly.

"He must beat her where it will not leave marks. He should not beat her on the hand... He should beat her in some places where it will not cause any damage. He should not beat her like he would beat an animal or a child -- slapping them right and left.

After support for Terrorism, this is one of the main motivations for the "removal" of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Thier treatment of women went faar beyond beatings, and removed all rights of women period. Including thier right to a basic education. They were a great example of how manipulative fundamentalists and extremists can be.

However, I don't think the West's history is much different, we have just evolved beyond this in the last couple hundred years. I would definitley hesitate to paint the entire region like this, as many of the more progressive Middle Eastern Nations are much more in line with modern Western values and equality.

Once we get the majority of these folks out of mud huts and subsistence living, with widespread access to education (so they can participate at a peer level with the west), hopefully they too will begin to reject these practices. It is surprising to me however, that this is one subject where Iran of all places, is more progressive than Saudi Arabia.

Probably a little clue that Saudi Arabia, while technically an ally, is not the Country most Americans and Canadians think it is. They are just smart enough to play nice in public. ;)

now, for those of you believe in spanking your kids when they do something wrong, how is this any different?

All this guy is saying is to treat your wife like many people in this county treat their kids. just substitute the word beat with spank or discipline physically.

And, as someone has already mentioned, all of those groups engage in illegal activities (by our laws and standards). In other cultures, the actions of those groups (or groups similar) would be protected under Islamic law (as in, Afghanistan under the Taliban rule).

In some states, wives do not always have to press charges. The state can press charges. Georgia is one such state. It is a practice that is beneficial for those wives you mention who may have low self esteem, erroneously feel it is their fault for getting beaten, or fear that their husbands will retaliate more if they do have them arrested.

I do agree with what you said about violence in our media. Unfortunately, there are many people out there who feel that there is no connection between events like the Virginia Tech shootings and our over-violenced entertainment industry. Yet we wonder where our kids get these crazy ideas.

Your first premise is wrong. A LEO is absolutely required, in almost all jurisdictions,, to make an arrest of there is obvious sign of injury-regardless of whether the victim wants to press charges.

I have made several arrests of men who set fire to cars or houses of a domestic relation. I always charged domestic violence in relation to the other obvious charges. I have been asked (begged) to drop the charges by the victims (not all of them) and I never did. NJ law takes that issue completely out of a police officer, prosecutor or Judge's hands.

Your second premise is also wrong. Groups like you mentioned are hate groups. They are not mainstream religious groups. They are not given TV shows and asked to hand out advice like they were calling into Dr. Laura.

No of course not, but the poverty and lower classes in these countries make it that much easier for these attitudes to prevail. They are sheltered and have little to no interaction with the outside world. This guy is one example in the mainstream of how the strict interpretation (or mis-interpretation) of the Koran is so prevalent.

If it were not for the sheer number of susceptible people in developing nations, these attitudes would be the fringe of society. Extremist religion is always the easiest to preach and sustain when you can draw a large following of poor and working poor.

How many upper-class neighbourhoods do you see in any country that are dominated by an extremist population (uber-liberal aside ;) )? In most of these middle eastern countries, there is a significant portion of the youngest generation that is trying to embrace more moderate and western values. They are the minority however, and the political division created by the recent conflict doesn't help encourage a change in the stance.

True, but the Irish were blowing up Brits for decades, and the end result to that conflict was semi-independance, and widespread amnesty.

99.99999999999% of the US does, indeed, completely write them off. The IRA was mainstream. Al Queda is mainstream in the middle east. I'm not out to argue arrest and the law, just making an observation. I will note, while they may get arrested, how long do they actually stay in jail for beating their wife if she doesn't press charges? Overnight at the most? I am impressed with NJ if that's the case, BTW.

Ah, yes, you are right there. However, this gets into the whole extremist thing again. Not every person who practices Islam is teaching their kids how to become terrorists. Just as not all Christians are teaching their kids "God hates Fags" or to hate black people or any number of other things extreme Christians believe.

Are you kidding me? Look at the video again. This video is from a television program that is regularly broadcast on state TV that stars this man. He gives advice like this EVERY WEEK! Your comments show that you have either an incredibly distorted or an incredibly naive view of the world. Most people in the US believe "beating" your children or your wife is dead wrong. People in the US haven't believed in wholesale disciplining of a wife by her husband since the freakin' Puritans-about 500 years ago. The TV show cited is happening TODAY.

George-- Believe me when I say I'm not trying to sound intellectual at all. I'm just pointing out some observations I see that are hypocritical of our society. I'm not out to argue or debate with anyone. If you don't like my opinion or my rationality behind it (no matter how bad I am at explaining it), that's fine. No reason to try to belittle me for it, I don't believe I've belittled you for your opinion.

We are a Christian society (which by the way teaches "judge not lest ye be judged"), they are an Islamic society. There are very distinct differences in our worlds. To us, it may seem intolerable to allow someone to "beat" their wife (by the way, can you tell me if our interpretation/definition of the word "beat" is the same as theirs?). To their culture, it may be intolerable for us to drink alcohol, cheat on our wives, or any number of things that happen on a regular occurence in our society legally.

Generally, I'm saying before we start criticizing other faiths and cultures, we really need to take a long look at ours and fix it.

Chicago-- Don't think for a second that my head is in the sand. I'm fully aware of what is going on with terrorist attacks and how many are dying because of it. I'm not supporting their actions by any means, but to say that 1.61 billion Muslims are all teaching their children to become terrorists is a bit out there, don't you think? Comparitively, how many of our children are becoming theives and murderers? Where are they learning that. Is our society trully any better, considering how many people have likely died due to murder or drunk drivers in our country?

Once again, I just feel like we need to take a close look at what's happening in our own country that's basically ignored, or at least put lower on the priority list because of the focus on terrorism (NOT take focus off of terrorism as a whole).

You know, we get it. You are in favor of beating your children. You can let it go.

I think, as we have shown in about a hundred threads on this forum, that this country may have been founded on the Judeo/Christian ethic, it can not be described today as a "Christian nation". You continue to try to twist what happens in our country as an excuse for people to strap bombs on their children and to beat their wives. No one is suggesting that we condemn another culture and ignore the social issues facing ours. But it is ludicrous to suggest that we cannot combat social injustice in another country or come out against the sexist, authoritarian principles of a major religion until we have a zero crime rate. That is absurd.

You take one sentence from the Bible (no Bob, I really don't want to start another religious debate. That is not my point here) and twist it to mean that Christians should ignore what is wrong because we can be accused of "judging" those people. You want to beat your chidren and your wife, go right ahead. But don't expect most civilized people to sit back and ignore you because they don't "judge". It would be interesting to see what Sunday School class you went to.

That raises a good point...IF (note the big IF) the context behind his teaching/lecture is telling men that they may beat their wives but to not go overboard and only use beatings when all else fails it may not be as terrible as it sounds. Not to say I condone or think this is a good way of dealing with your spouse, children or anyone else, but again as Voyager9 pointed out he may be one of the more progressive thinkers and trying to help...again a better tact would be to recommend no beatings. But, hopefully; more progressives will emerge from that culture and get to that point where beatings, no matter how "gentle", are no longer tolerated and accepted.

I recognize that there are those in the Muslim culture and other cultures that do things that are evil and wrong from any one's perspective. My comments were referring to the thread at hand. Not all Muslims are evil and wish harm and death, but you are right there are many that do and there is plenty of evidence throughout history. As for the content of the original post, I know from experience that folks from the Middle Eastern countries think we have some pretty strange customs, so basically it comes down to "Each His/Her Own". :p

Not intending to lash out at you here, Malahat, but this kind of rationalization gets to me after a while. Yes, I think I've heard of that "rule of thumb" origin story before. According to English law, it was never actually "legal." But, suppose it was more than a myth (and this is the point I want to make), are we to say that something that was tolerable in the 1600s should prevent us from feeling today as though domestic abuse, regardless of whether it is in the name of God or Fried Chicken, is unacceptable? It is very hard to take a stance on Middle Eastern injustices without someone taking you on a frustrating and frankly irrelevant journey back in time to a land where inherent guilt gets passed on from generation to generation through the "Christian history of the West." Perhaps if I were 400 years old and could remember beating my wife with a stick no bigger than my thumb (which I'm not and I can't), then I'd gladly call myself a hypocrite and move on to something else. Pointing to our past as an excuse to not do anything is certainly not going to help the women's rights movement. If nothing else, our past is exactly the reason we need to speak out against this kind of behavior.

But it is ludicrous to suggest that we cannot combat social injustice in another country or come out against the sexist, authoritarian principles of a major religion until we have a zero crime rate. Approx. 1500 people per month are victims of homocide in this country.

In 2006, 13,470 people were killed by drunk drivers. 1,122.5/month.

Over 200,000 people per year are raped in this country.

So, in the same two days that Islamic extremists killed 84 people and injured 39, we kill 100 people by homocide, 74 by drunk drivers, and rape nearly 1,100 peop.e. We are trully an example of morality, aren't we.

Now, you tell me, who are we to judge another culture's actions and beliefs?

(Al-Bukhari, English Translation, vol. 8, Hadith 68, pp. 42-43), "I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)". Others hadiths do indicate that husbands have a right to discipline their wives in a civilized manner to a certain extent:

You too have right over them, and that they should not allow anyone to sit on your bed whom you do not like. But if they do that, you can chastise them but not severely. In summary, according to both the Qur'an and Hadith, a woman may indeed have physical harm done to her if the circumstances warrant, with one such allowance being in the case of disobedience. This certainly does not mean that all Muslim men beat their wives, only that Islam allows them.

This was not the case of "one man" with a crazy idea. He was preaching their religious beliefs straight out of their religious texts and advocating that these rules be followed in todays world. For you to argue that we are no better here because we have people that break the law is absurd. We HAVE LAWS against this type of behavior.

You can pull up many ancient, quirky Bible quotes. It is meaningless in western society. Doesn't the Bible say the penalty for homosexualty is death? Please tell me when the last execution in this country was for the crime of homosexuality. When was it in Iran? Saudi Arabia?

As far as Matthew 7, no research needed. This chapter is written from the context of Matthew criticizing the Pharisees (Christians) judgement of Jesus. In fact, no where in this Chapter does the Bible speak to NEVER judging. The Bible teaches in about 10,000 different places that there is a right and wrong. It teaches nowhere that Christians are not to stand up and speak out against what is wrong.

The Pharisees judged other Christians based on standards that were not Biblical. Jesus was adminishing them to not judge other Christians until the sin their own lives was cleaned up. It says NOTHING about ignoring what is morally wrong because they are sinners. EVERYONE sins. EVERYONE.

Our laws in regards to domestic assault are a joke. How many times have you seen it: wife gets beat up, wife calls cops, cops arrest husband, wife refuses to press charges, husband is released, the the cycle opens up again. We put them in jail for a few hours and set them free to repeat it until the wife comes up missing or dead. Hell, I see this happen regularly with a member of my wife's family, the exact same cycle. Believe me, I wish our laws took the decision out of the woman's hands, but that would violate her civil rights or some BS.

Our lowest, criminal element is an indicator of the morality of our society. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world! Although our population makes up only 5% of the world's, our prison population makes up 25% of the world's. 7 million people in this country are in prison, on probation, or onparole. Yet we think we are the moral police of the world? Do you not see the hypocracy in this? This is only the people who get caught! How many more are we letting off on plea bargains?
