We were awarded funds for a tanker, since the award our current tanker has been taken out of service due to the frame breaking. My question is do we have to wait until we have our new tanker to get rid of the piece of "playground equipment" we have sitting in our firehouse? Thanks for the advice.

No, looks like it was coming out of service whether you got the grant or not. If you claimed you'd take it out of service in the app you still can't get rid of it to another fire department even though it died before the other one showed up.

If you were awarded a tanker to replace an unsafe unit , be prepared to document that the old unit has been permanently removed from fire service use. you will need this foe your closeout package. Other than that I can't see why you can't dispose of an old out of service tanker now. Maybe a call or e-mail to your grant specialist to be sure your covered would be a good idea.

BC79er, I would not even think about selling this tanker to another FD. All i am asking is to why do we have to keep a hunk of metal laying around? Does the DHS normally come out and look at the old while you usher in the new?

No they won't specifically. Take a picture of it to prove you owned it ,then deadline it and get it off the lot showing that whomever hauls it aways signs off on the fact that it cannot be returned to use as a fire service vehicle and you should be fine.;)
