Anyone know if there are requirements for applying? Certifications needed? I understand they are to begin hiring soon so with that said does anyone have any tips for this particular department? I'm already a volunteer and will begin my Fire I certification in October.

Doesn't anyone have anything to say about DFD? How is their system? Good department or bad? From what I've read it sounds like they are working to improve it....any comments?

Hi! I took their test in late 2003. I'm origianlly from the Monroe County area, and know a lot of vollys down there (I used to work for the newspaper in Monroe)
At that time, fire certs were not required. We signed up at COBO arena, and took the written and agility test there as well. It was a general knowlede test, with basic match, reading, etc.
The agility is pretty simple, and I would have passed but I had gotten disqualified becasue I put a ladder back on the rungs upside down, and I'm still kicking myself every day for that. They took vitals before to make sure your blood presseure was not too high. if it was, you could couldn't test.
It never hurts to have your certs. It will help when the time comes for an interview, becasue you going for your certs shows initiative. It will also help you get through the academy becasue you will already be familiar with the subject.
I'm not sure about the "good" and "bad" of Detroit Fire so I can't help you there.
When are they planning on hiring?
Good Luck!!

CFerd...what sucks about the department? Are they doing anything to improve the problems? Is this the feeling of most guys or just a select few? Thanks man.

shoddy or lacking equipment, old rigs... old everything really, everyone I know with like 3-5 years or less wants to go somewhere else...

CFerd do you currently work there or did you used to? I heard they just bought 12 new fire rigs within the past month and 16 new ambulances and are buying 16 more in the near future. Is this true? Anybody else have anything to pitch in about the dept.?

more like 2 or 3 trucks, and maybe 5 or 6 ambulances... they promise more rigs in the future but who knows...

I hate people who talk sh** about DFD when there are plenty of guys that would kill for a job on the department. Maybe you should resign so someone that would enjoy the job can take your place. My 2 cents. Detroit is a hard department to get on. I have family on the job and applied in 2001 and 2003 took written agility and as far as getting fingerprinted and nothing. Don't get your hopes up and keep going to school get your certs and try for the burbs... it's going to be hard for a fire job anywhere you look. Stay out of trouble and keep on trying and you'll land a great job somewhere... good luck

Andy,
Last I knew, DFD had firefighters layed off, and they built a list a couple years ago. In order to get a job, they would have to hire all the lay-offs back, then finish the list, and start testing. Your best bet is to keep an eye on the City of Detroit web site for employment info. Good Luck!

Kwame was just quoted in the Free Press last week saying that they wanted to hire 67 firefighters by 2012. So I wouldn't think that the test would be coming anytime soon, but I could be wrong.

When was the last test that Detroit gave, what list are they working off of? Thanks for anyone's help, I am not from the Detroit area just trying to find out some info for the future, I have read and heard that to this day Detroit continues to struggle with their budget. Just to confirm there are still firefighters for Detroit that are "layed-off"? Thanks again for your help.

I don't know too much about them, but even if they did hire, wouldn't it only be a few? Because I heard they have laid a lot of guys off in the past due to budget.

The commish has the right to use the list from 2004 if he wants but the city needs to make a new list due to the fact that it is over 2 years old... there are rumors of a new list but don't believe anyone until you have your application in hand... The city has money... the fire department has money... do they want to spend it? Well they have started by buying new engines and ems rigs and such but as for allocating money for new trainees no

Detroit is now a regional fire training center (as of 11:30 thursday dec 13)which is good news for all that are in search of FF1 and FF2 training but no official release has been made yet...

Anything?

Also, as far as the academy being a regional academy now, do you think that the city will start hiring soon? I ask this because the police department made their academy a regional academy last year and started hiring shortly after.
