We received an email notifying us of a price reduction in our PPE grant request.
They requested us to reduce:
Coats from $1200 to $900
Helmets from $300 to $200
Gloves from $100 to $50
They left alone:
Pants $700
Boots $250
Flashlights $115
Goggles $40
In addition they reduced our request:
Extractor washer from $10,800 to $9,000
I'm ok with this, (after all it is a grant), but we are really gonna have some issues finding quality jackets for $900 and Helmets for $200.
Do we have any options? Is this a standard reduction request?

$1600 for coat and pant ensemble & $200 for helmets is more than enough.

hinesfire, remember the grant is designed to fund "basic" NFPA compliant firefighting equipment, not bells and whistles. Last year the limit on coat and pants was $1200; this year they went up to $1500 or so becuase of the addition of the DRD device. Unless you are living in Nome, AK or out in Guam somehwere I don't see them budging on those prices at all. Most times if they are asking for a reduction, that FPS is actually looking at your request and a supplier onlinne with prices in the area that they are reducing you to. Your reduction appears ot be consistent with what I have seen across the board this year.Tell your suppliers to sharpen that pencil!;)

I just got a quote for some additional Janesville PBI. Coat (w/DRD), pants and susp. $1260/set. Our standard turnout and very nice, completely serviceable and appropriate equipment. Spend $ on leather boots, $1900/set???? That's WAAYYYYY beyond basics.

I think our Cairns ReaXtion gear cost us around $1400/set for pants/coat. That's with Advance fabric, the top-of-the-line thermal and moisture barriers, radio pockets, hand warmer pockets, and several bells (not quite whistles, though). $1600/set is plenty!
I agree with neiowa, go with leather boots. My biggest problem with the leathers is trying to convice my career department we need to go to them. I doubt they are, but with gear on they feel lighter than my duty boots. I don't see guys dragging their feet walking around the fireground anymore, either.

I know you are discussing turnouts, but we purchased, using our state fire commissioner grants, a nice 30lb UniMac machine from Super Laundry delivered and installed for around $6000.00.

That is in line with other reductions, ours was reduced from $1,000 to $900 giving us $1,400/set ($500/pant). Should be enough, if not we will cover the over runs.

Good ideas and suggestions.
Interestingly enough today I received a phone call from the Regional Fire Program Specialist in response to my inquiry about negociating these reductions. His advise was to negociate the new item costs but to be sure I had plenty of documentation to back it up with, not simply saying "its not enough". There is some room for movement. The finance side of the program who is sending out the reduction requests is not the final say, simply a step along the grant process and pass on their recommendations for funding levels.
So thats the news for today.

We have been assurred by our Total Fire rep that FDNY spec Morning Pride can be had for the $1,600 per set or less. This is better than the lame NJ State Contract pricing.

Getting your own bid is always better than using a state bid. A state bid just keeps you from having to go out and get bids yourself.

We also got a reduction notice.
we asked for:
45 min SCBA's with extra cylinder $6400 (reduced to $5000)
helmets $240 (reduced to $200)
boots $250
coats $975 (reduced to $900)
pants $735
gloves $50
hoods $35
extra face pieces $500
By listing the pant and coat seperately, we actually got by with $1635 per set ...so we shouldn't have any problem. Looks like we're going to be in the same boat as a lot of others on here with SCBA's though...will probably have to go with 02 compliant to meet the cost. Hopefully we'll get our official announcement next week.

I hope you have better luck in finding 02 compliant paks in your region. I have found only one vender in our area that still had any left on the shelf. I have been told that you can still order 02's from the manufacturer, but they will not have the NFPA approval sticker on them. Good luck.

You may not have to worry much... I got a price quote on the 07 compliant scba with mask & spare bottle for 5100.00 (NYS contract price) As other companies get 07 compliance and the price bidding plays out, I'm sure the price will dip slightly below the 5000 threshold. Now if only I'd get the blasted 1199a, I'd place my order....

What manufacturer was the 07 compliant? We had a quote of $6500 for scba and was reduced to $5000 in our grant. We use Survivair.

Scott
Based on a conversation with our sales rep a couple of weeks ago (a Scott dealer). Even though Scott has been certfied '07 compliant, he beleived there will still be a delay to order them; only because others have not and it would give Scott an unfair market advantage.

Well, they have not been announced because they are currently the only one that has obtained 07 compliance (at last figures, the others won't be ready until Feb.) Apparently, there is some issue with having only one manuf. compliant, so although orders are being received for them (with shipping to commence in the early fall I'm told) someone (not the manuf.) does not want them announced until there is a little competition... I will say that it is not survivair (or MSA, Interspiro, ISI, or Drager...) but it is a large company... There wasn't much that had to be changed form the current 02 NFPA to make it 07, and it apparently flew through testing.

And it is causing a major headache for AFG admin as well.....;)

Met today with another SCBA manufacturer and they believe theirs will be 2007 certified by end of October at the latest. Anybody else herd the same, or another time frame.

Check out the following website:
http://www.seinet.org/CPL/nfpa1981_07.htm
It is the testing facility that certifies NFPA 1981 on scba's. As of Friday, August 31, 2007 Interspiro is the only scba with a 1981-2007 certification.

Catch22. How many sets were you buying in order to get the Reaxtion Gear for $1400/set with some of the bells but not the whistles. I like the gear, but right now am torn between the Reaxtion Gear or just replacing our gear with our current manufacture. I like our current gear, but feel that I can get different specs with alot more options since I am buying a large quanity of gear. Thanks.
