View Full Version : AFG Communications Question?

We've applied to replace our UHF system with a VHF system. Here is why. We are currently the only department out of 36 in our county operating on the UHF system, and have trouble communicating with M/A departments while on scene. We've applied for radios and pagers. I understand that our communications plan must be in line with the states homeland security plan.

1. If our communications plan does not meet the states, could we possibly still be funded because of interoperibility(sp?) problems within our county?

We've applied for more radios and pagers then seated postions on apparatus. The reason for this is we issue radios to all "active" firefighters if possible, and pagers to new recruits. We find that giving all firefighters communications on scene makes sure that everyone gets the message.

2. Could this plan possibly be funded for more then the seats we have?

Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

1) Probably not, PG is pretty set on state agreement being the first step to approval.

2) If the state doesn't care or still likes your setup and passes you on to DHS, then also PG has # of radios limited to seated positions. Individual radios is excessive in the AFG world. Pagers for everyone is expected, so you can get 1 per member including recruits.

BC79er thanks for the info.

I'm familiar with the PG, but I was trying to see if anyone thought exceptions could be made???

1) IF the state has some type of communication plan it hasn't been expressed to the first responders.

2) The PG also puts a great deal into interoperability, which is what we are trying to accomplish.

I understand on the number of radios as well, but I wish it could be different!

The only exception for radios above and beyond seating positions is for chief officers and it must be justified within the narrative - still no guarantee though

INformation above is also what I would concurr with, they are oging to reduce your # of hand helds to seated positions only. I can;t imagine that the other 36 departments paid for all their radios with their own funds, so they must have used some grants which implies that your SAA probably approved the system they are using as being acceptable. Call them and see now if it is within their plans for what you asked for.;)
