It's a pretty good place to work and growing constantly, it has it's problems just like anywhere else. But, many of the people that have left for "greener pastures" usually come back. It is a combination system with approximately 400-450 uniformed employees. There are a couple of work schedules, daywork (48 hr workweek M-F 0600-1800 with a rotating dayoff) and shiftwork (24 on 48 off with a kelly day), there is more and more shiftwork opportunities developing each year. Originally shiftwork assignments were limited to just medic units but not anymore, there are several engine companies, a rescue company and combination engine/tower assignment (it depends what the volunteers want to staff when they come in on their duty). The training done in the department (recruit school, drills, yearly burns, etc..) is normally top notch. Decent pay and good benefits.
The downside is the area is relatively expensive to live, just like anywhere in the Northern Virginia area.
Where in NY are you located?
