I once saw a memorial that had the ringing of the bells 3-3-5, is this just a Chicago thing or is this nation wide. We are doing a Firefighters memorial mass and were wanting to do this at the mass. Does anyone have any info on this.
Thanks

3-3-5 is the cfd code for going home. Street boxes all have keys in them and you can tap messages to the alarm office. If, for example, truck 48 was returning, they would tap 3-3-5-3-5-8 (335 for returning company and 358 is t48's signature). This system went out around '96 but all houses still have their keys and ticker tape machines at the joker stand. I don't know why any other department would use it unless they used the same codes as cfd.

Many departments use the FDNY's signal of 5-5-5-5.

My old dept used 3-3-5 because we were next door to Chicago.

Here we use 6-6-6-6
