54 people showed up to the written. 4 positions available. I think they said they wanted to fill 1 to send to the academy in june.

I think they are still looking to fill 2 or 3 vacancies to satisify the manpower clause in their contract. Did you take the test? I worked there for 8 years before getting on in NYC in May fo 1999.

i actually got offered a postion. but the chief timed the distance from the station to my house and i was 90 seconds too far. i know you have a year to meet the 15 minute requirement but we just bought the house a little over a month ago so i had to pass. he said if it was just a few seconds over he would let it slide but a minute and a half was just too much to let go. frustrating to say the least. so close!

thanks crankshaft...at least i know my interview skills are up to par. the chief seems like a really cool guy, he's keeping my name on the list of 3 people who are stand bys for the next 3 positions if they open up in the next 2 years. just in case circumstances change. maybe the policy will change...or maybe my wife will kick me out and i'll have to move..ha

and how does it work? I mean at 4 am you might be within 15 min but at rush hour it may be twice that.

Not sure when the time limit first started. How they do it is the chief times the drive to your house from the station then times it back and averages them together. he said he would do it a few times if he needed to...say if we got stuck behind someone going 15 mph the whole way he wouldnt make the decision on that time. but you arent allowed to go any more than 5 mph over the speed limit.

FWIW, it wouldn't be in the contract if the union didn't want it, too. Strict residency requirements haven't been legal in CT for over a decade. They are, however, a permissible subject for collective bargaining which means that they're gone the moment one side or the other doesn't want them anymore.

Just because something's in a contract doesn't mean the union wants it. A city might win certain points during the contract process that union doesn't want.

Residency isn't a mandatory subject for bargaining. If the union or the town don't both want it, it's gone. Period.
