Hi, I just graduated from IRCC's Fire Academy here in South Florida and passed state. Since I didn't know what I wanted for graduation my parents gave me cash and told me to get what I needed. My question is what should I get? I know I will need station boots, a personal light and personal escape rope. Which ones are good? Do you guys have any preferences? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Before you go on a spending spree, are you on a department yet?

Find out what you'll need to buy yourself based on what the department you get hired by will provide. Will you get a clothing allowance for necessary items right off the bat, or do you have to wait?

Also, once on a department, talk to your officer, and the senior guys, and see what they recommend you get for yourself, based on their time in, and experiences. They can tell you what is the most efficient way to spend the money you have, on things you'll actually need and use. I am a big proponent of bail out rope though. But talk to everyone first, and see what they recommend.

Leather boots, a leather helmet and a good right angle flashlight.

Oh, and if you find that your dept already supplies all those things, I'll send you my address...I can always use spares!;)

Congrats Brother! Stay safe, and have a Happy Easter!!!!!:D

Sure Brother, send me your address. I think I'll hold off on the leather boots and helmet for now. Hopefully whichever dept picks me up will allow me to have them.

Stay safe and Happy Easter to you too!!!

Spend it on your car, maybe a tune up or some tires what ever it needs to remain reliable (or become reliable if it isn't).

You will be driving a lot while you test and will need a reliable car when you get hired. There is nothing worse than missing a Chiefs oral because you got a flat or getting fired on probation because you keep having car trouble. I know the first from personal experience (breakdown not a flat), luckily the closest I came to the second was my car breaking down on the way home.
