D.C. Council Confirms First Female Police Chief
New Chief Plans Proactive Approach To Crime Fighting
POSTED: 6:56 am EDT April 4, 2007
WASHINGTON -- D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's selection for the city's new police chief is finally official.
Cathy Lanier was unanimously approved Tuesday by the D.C. City Council, making her the city's first woman to lead the police department.
Lanier said she is ready to change the whole mentality and mood of the agency, and people should expect huge changes.
Lanier is a 16-year veteran of the force and a protoge of former chief Charles Ramsey, who retired in December after Fenty was elected mayor.
The new police chief was given a five-year contract and will be paid $175,000 annually, the same as Ramsey's salary.
Her plan is to be proactive instead of retroactive by figuring out where crime problems might occur and targeting them first, she said.
