So, my company is an all volunteer unit. Most of the positions that we get paid for, are in the process of going away. So, some of us are looking for gainful employement at a company where we can do industrial emergency response.
Several of us are HazMat Specialist, EMT-B and Rescue Systems 1 (some 2) trained. A couple of us will have confined space rescue training over the next 2 months.
Besides fire, none of us have that training, where can we look for positions like this? I personally am finding it hard to find local companies that have dedicated response teams, or have a strong volunteer team.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Anthony

Ideally staying in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some are willing to move (single guys with no attachments). Me, married with one kid and another on the way--no moving for me.
Just looking for website suggestions or specific companies if anyone knows of any.
Thanks!

I don't know how much experience you have in the fire service, but some places want you to have a few under your belt. I sugeest if you want to get in on the industrial side, seek out some industrial based training. Sometimes it is hard to find, but as anyone that works on the industrial side will tell you, its a different animal.
Some ideas to start with:
-Start researching various industries around you that you would like to work in, then check their websites for careers.
-Network, Network, Network. Talk with these companies, employees, etc. There is a definite difference between kissing a** and sucking a**.
-Can you enter these companies another way? (ie going in as a welder for a few years and transfer into Emergency Response full time?)
Always be prepared for various opportunities. Somtimes being in the right place at the right time helps.

I have been doing industrial emergency management for ~5 years now-just no fire suppression.
I am currently paid to do Quality Assurance, and am volunteering on our company team (all volunteers). Yeah, I have ways into some companies without going through the emergency response route; but, what I am hoping is to find a company which will take me in under emergency management from the start.
Thanks for the replys.

Try visiting the refinery in Richmond. I believe it is Chevron. Also try Aerojet in Sacramento. As for training Texas A&M fire program has a website with some very good industrial training.

I pretty sure that I saw a job announcement for fire protection specialist at Aerojet in the last month
Also, consider looking into environmental remediation companies in the area. They need hazmat train people. Big ones like URS are nationwide. Some local ones in NorCal are Clearwater Environmental (I think their in Emoryville) and Park Environmental.

would anyone happen to know on average how often does the fdny exam come up?
Do a search and use the right section of this board. Or the FDNY website
This is for Industrial Firefighting.
