A family situation is taking us to Texas. I am retired military and I have been a career firefighter for eight years. I would like to stay in the fire service. I'm sure any career firefighter can understand. Is there any department that I can apply to that don't have an age restriction, (even though the federal law prohibits age discrimination). I don't care about the retirement plan. I am willing to waive that. I have my own retirement programs to contribute to. The areas of interest are around Dennison, Sherman, Denton or Killeen.
Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Most depts that are non-civil service don't have age limits. Also a lot of them that have TMRS have 5 yr vesting and let you buy into the retirement. Checkk the Texas Commision on fire Protection's web site to see who is hiring and stuff. also Tmk.org under classifieds has job postings. Good luck. chris

That website would be ...

http://www.tcfp.state.tx.us/

There's an emplyment link. You'll see a lot of anouncements require a TCFP Basic Firefighter or better cert and a TDH med cert. Reciprocity is fairly easy. Not sure about Florida EMT certs. But, all you need for a TCFP Basic Firefighter is IFSAC Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Ops, and some medical trainning I think. Give their office a call sometime to find out more. They're fairly helpful when it comes to reciprocity for out of staters as long as your certs are sealed. Good luck.

50, in September. I bench 300, run 1.5 miles in 12 min, can hump hose, raise ladders, pump water and save lives.

Right on brother!!

Not too far behind you in age. I have never heard any departments hiring 50 yo's, but there is always a first. Good luck in your search.

p.s. If nothing else, you could always volunteer like myself. Same feeling, just less pay.

i think you will be able to find a place with just a little research. there are still many departments that are 'career' but not 'union' in Texas. the Commission website that they pointed you to is good, also links are added everyday at Texas-Fire.com (http://www.texas-fire.com)
