The availability of controlled, higher energy delivering AED's have relegated it to not being needed very often.

In general, it is only to be used for a witnessed cardiac arrest--witnessed in the sense that we see it happen on the monitor. For that reason, it is not something that could be considered a BLS skill. But, like AZCEP said, the greater availability of rapid defibrillation pretty much eliminates the need nowadays.

Yes, it is definetely not a BLS skill, according to what I've been taught...it is only to be used by ACLS certified...
