I'm a Probie and our LT asked the differnece between a Halligan and a Hulligan (spelling?). I have not been able to find anything to tell me the difference or even what a hullingan is. Can anybody help?

In all seriousness, in my department we refer to the cast-and-machined one-piece tool as a halligan, and the made in three-pieces-and-screwed togetherr tool as a houligan. And honestly, I have no idea why?

Heh, apparently that's what we call them 'cause that's what they ARE called. How 'bout that. I'm always a bit surprised when our local folklore turns out to have a basis in fact.

Wouldn't it have been better to find one of your senior men in house and ask them this question? If you did, hey good on ya. Believe it or not they may look scary and talk tough, but I have not met one senior firefighter who would not stop and explain something if a probie ask's. Might you get a ribbing later? Sure.

Halligan bars are forged one peice tools. Hooligan bars are held together with set screws and should be used for nothing more than trophies.

The Hooligan bars are made by Paratech. They have a thicker fork end, the adze end isn't curved, the shaft it round and not as ergonomic as compared to the hexagonal shaft of a real Halligan. Basically the Hooligan is far inferior to a Halligan bar. As has been said above the Pro Bar is a true Halligan, however, a "Quick Bar" also meets the Halligan specs.
