If given the choice between the Lamborghini Gallardo or a Dodge Charger for a patrol car, give me the raging bull over the ram anyday.

Artie.. wouldn't the Lambo in red make a fitting vehicle for a Deputy Chief? :D

yup, i know mass. state police has a few and other departments in the area are picking up on them, from what i've heard is that since ford discontinued the production of the crown vics departments are looking for other choices, and the chargers are a fairly reasonable rear wheel drive option, compared to the chevy impalas where they would have to retrain officers b/c it's a different course with front wheel drive patrol cars

Ford hasn't totally discontinued the CV....

It will go into "Fleet Vehicle" status... PD's should still be able to get them.

MHQ is a major dealer of Dodge and Ford police/fire/municipal vehilces. One of their facilities is right here in Marlborough.

They just equipped a fleet of Ford Mustang GT's for use on the Massachusetts Turnpike... totally unmarked, total stealth machines!

The front blue lights are blue strobes incorporated into the fog lights.
The rear blues are small strobes units mounted in the rear window shelf area.

Dodge is certainly working hard to put the chargers into patrol fleet service. As a Mopar man, I am certainly happy to see that. This marks the first real industry-wide presence of Mopars in front-line service since the 70's, before Dodge's demise (the intrepid never really caught on, and was not well received).

And Hemi's to boot. I hope i don't get pulled over by one of those, I would probably ASK for a close look at his car. :p

I presently live in New Hampshire where the state police are switching over to the new Dodge Chargers. I currently work for a county sheriff's office and am assigned a 2003 crown vic which I do prisoner transports with. Although I'm not too overly concerned with prisoner comfort I must say the new chargers seem to have much less room in the rear seat than the CV. Many times I've transported 3 good sized adults (the max allowed) in the CV with no problem. After sitting in the back seat of one of the new chargers, I doubt if I could have fit some of those people in there. They may look cool, go faster, and are reportedly better on gas but for my particular needs, I like the crown vic. Some of our deputies drive 4WD Chevy Tahoes which I wouldn't mind either.

I guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist. When I was a FF and we went from red to yellow fire trucks, I hated it. Fire apparatus are supposed to be red and police cars crown vics. Period!!!!:)

BTW, I like Gonzo's ride too. If I could be assigned one of those, to hell with prisoner comfort.:D

Mike..you would be charged with cruel and unusual punishment and violation of a prisoner's right to be carted to and from court appearances in comfort.. While the 'Stang has a back seat, the only person who could be comfortable sitting back there would be Bou's little buddy... Mini-me! :D

Maryland is starting to see Chargers showing up on the streets. Anne Arundel County just bought a bunch, Prince Georges County, after several years of Impalas, just bought a huge pile of Crown Vics. I had an unmarked Crown Vic for about 5 years, and I'd take one again in a heartbeat.......:) :) On the other hand, I wouldn't turn down a Charger......:D

What's the point of having something faster than a crown vic interceptor if you still need the crown vics to do PIT maneuvers? I mean, we might see Chargers (or porches, bmws, etc) doing PITs after the price tags go down, but I'd imagine the chiefs having a head-rolling contest the first time one of those babies gets wrecked. They do look nice though. I remember when we used to think the D.A.R.E. corvette looked cool.

Put some machine guns behind the headlights, maybe a SAM launcher in the trunk, ya know?

there is almost no difference in price between the charger and crown vic in price for a police department..like anyother manufacturer it depends on the options, just like a fire truck, you can get a cheap one or an expensive one

https://www.fleet.chrysler.com/fleetcda/CDAController?pageid=33

as far as needing more room, for prisoner transport or k-9 or whatever else
the dodge magnum covers that pretty well

The coolest cop cars Ive ever seen was back in the mid 1980's. Florida Highway Patrol had a fully-loaded Corvete, 300Z and Firebird they took from drug dealers. They re-painted them in FHP colors, put on some blue lights and presto, hot rod patrol cars.

As a College-age kid (as opposed to the Adult-age kid I am today ;) ) I remember the Ontario Provincial Police kept some "Cool" rides.

There was a 90 Corvette in gold that made the PR circuit, and more recently I have heard of some BMW SUV's being used for that role. But for the real street meat, they ran a fleet of IROC Camaros fully tuned and caged for patrolling and chasing on the highways around Toronto.

I don't know if they still have a performance fleet, but for the members, it was a very popular detail back then with a long waiting list for the pro-driving course.

And Memphis State/"University of Memphis"even has a Charger for its campus police to use.Why would a college need such a hot car? It's not like they're going to be chasing them Duke boys over to the next county and in need of the speed and horsepower.
Growing up,I remember when MPD used blue and gold Dodge Polaras. My folks even bought one in 77 and got rid of it just before I turned 16.That car would rattle windows all up and down the street when idling and going down the road between lights, you could watch the gas needle dropping towards "E".

Fairly recently the University of Illinois cops started using the chargers as patrol cars. Now what I don't understand is why a department that patrols mainly narrow city streets needs all that horse power.
I really don't like the fact that, espeacially with the low profile led lightbars, I can't pick them out when I'm driving on campus

i think you guys are missing it a little, just b/c a police deparment has/is buying dodge chargers doesnt mean they plan on doing alot of high speed chasing or need the speed, the charger although looks cool and has alot of the history of being a fast muscle car the standard police package Dodge Charger has a 3.5 V6 engine w/ 250hp(same hp as a V8 crown vic) although the hemi is optional(5.7 V8 w/ 340hp)

the hummer could've also been seized for a variety of reasons, it's fairly popular for a police department to seize a vehicle b/c of drugs or certain crimes and then turn it into a PR car, for things such as D.A.R.E. programs, "hey kid's yeah some of those drug dealers have some mighty fine rides well this was one of them and it's our's now"

Campus cops write tickets around your area?Whenever I'd wheel my ice cream truck on streets adjacent to "University
of Memphis"/Memphis State,if I saw anyone writing tickets,it was usually MPD or a county deputy without a campus cop in sight. But if I swung out the arm and pulled over to sell some bomb pops, they'd be crawling in the driver's window about how I'm blocking traffic more than the students ignoring the crosswalks and that I'm on private property(all the signs had "By order of MPD" on them).

Yeah Doug, they do every once in a while write parking tickets. Their really bad about jaywalking tickets. If you cross when that big red hand is up they will jump your @$$ quicker than a dog on a dead rabbit. But right now the students are gone so they are perty bored right now.

Yes Steeda, I know they are a bad example to represent other departments reasons for them. I am just yankin on your chain to get a rise out of you, but if you want you can pay the $50 dollar ticket. I wouldn't mind at all ;)
