Pantyhose Sales Hit Major Snag. Women Not Wearing Hose As Often

POSTED: 8:29 am EST December 11, 2006

It's not a great time to be in the pantyhose business.

It wasn't long ago that they were a staple in a career woman's wardrobe. Now, sheer hosiery faces an even a bigger snag -- more than a decade of declining sales.

Women just aren't wearing as much sheer hosiery these days. Hanesbrands reported that sales are down nearly 70 percent since 1995. Hanesbrands Vice President Romaine Sargent said women have greater wardrobe options as the workplace has become more casual.

Shorts, Capri-style pants and even flip-slops are accepted in many offices.

Plus, many women say pantyhose is tight, uncomfortable and one little run can ruin your whole day.

Hanesbrands is the nation's leading seller of women's sheer hosiery, but the company has been straightforward with investors about the sag in sales. The company said it's working on product innovations and is trying to take advantage of current fashion trends. But it admits there's little it can do about the sales decline until fashion trends turn in its favor.

The company said women ages 25 to 54 wear pantyhose an average of 1.8 times a week. That's down from three and a half times a week one decade ago.

Hosiery sales at Hanesbrands totaled $290 million in fiscal 2006. That's 68 percent lower than the $895 million in sales the company did in fiscal 1995.

Before polypro a lot of infantrymen wore thigh highs under the wool underwear. They didn't hold up well.

Used them to fix a broken fan belt in the car once or twice.

Also great for straining oil, paint, skimming swimming pools etc.

Damn handy in the toolkit.

It is "Sheep on a spit"

Turning slowly, roasting over the embers.

Nothing to do with Nylons, they look silly on sheep. :D

Don't forget polishing your boots....... As long as you have some polish still on the boot, just buff lightly with a piece of the nylons and they shine right up........

I refuse to wear hose. I'm afraid I won't be able to feel the heat and know when it's time to get out. Oh, wait, sorry, that's another thread. Never mind.

Rick, how many times have I told you not to bring your hobbies out in public!! :D

On a practical note, an old coppers trick from this side of the pond is to wear a pair of the wifes tights when on foot patrol in the middle of winter...very warm apparently. This also gives rise to the saying, "I can't wait to get home and get the wifes tights off...they're killing me!!"

All kidding aside, a woman not wearing hose with a skirt/dress shows a total lack of class. Sorry, but I dont care what the latest "style" is, or whats "in" in Hollywood.

Blame the way I was raised I guess. But its the same to me as a guy wearing a jacket without a tie. Big no-no.

Go ahead, call me old school. ;)

BTW, my wife NEVER wears a skirt/dress without hose. Her parents raised her right too. :p

I haven't worn pantyhose in about 10 years, or high heels (or the skirts/dresses that require such accesories). And don't really plan on ever wearing them again, if I can possibly get away with it.

Dave.

Just remember that if you see her feet waving around a lot, STOP what you are doing and ask her to remove them.
