Why does the hose run under the length of the truck?

They are driving forward as they load it instead of either backing, or pulling the hose to the engine.

. . . the idea being that it's damn hard to run over one of your firefighters as they load hose if the engine is rolling away from them as they work.
Plus the driver can't get lost if you tell them to follow the big yellow line. :D

Who cares! What I want to know..is when is the hose going to load itself!!!
Lol! j/k. It's great to see new inventions and innovations in the FD.
-What about automatic preconnect deployers?
-Hydraulic lift assist exosuits? (which actually exist but are so big and blocky they currently have no 'practical' use) :p
-Neurological implants? Learn HAZMAT Tech and Rope Rescue Tech in seconds! Hehe.

Looks like a lot of wasted space for the lowering mechanism.
Here's an idea and its much cheaper, "just shaaadup and load the hose" :)

It's funny...We were talking to our Pierce dealer about this hosebed (It's patented I bleive to Pierce as the Packmule) and they said don't even bother. The negatives outweight the benefits. We really didn't get into it because when they told us it limits your tank size to either 500 or 750 it was a moot point.

Or..you could be a Truckie and skip the hose loading crap altogether! :D :p

LDH reel. That's about as close to "self loading" as they come.
The only drawback is that you can't lay line as fast as you could with a traditional hose bed. OTOH, you can probably lay line as fast as you should with a traditional hose bed... ;)
Hand lines still work best hand packed but they're a lot less aggravation to load than the supply line anyway, IMHO.

We have a standard hose bed, but we drive forward to load the hose when possible. The driver can see what is in front much better than what is behind. It also eliminates the desire to pull the hose up off the road bed. As the hose comes out from under the truck it is layed up on the hose bed.

OK, what happens if the bed gets stuck???....... :D

In looking again I noticed the LDH is loaded on opposite sides of the hose bed with a length of hose crossing over from one side to the other. It looks like 2-1/2" or 3" in between the two LDH bays.
Is there some reason I haven't heard of to split the lay like this? I'd be inclined to put LDH on one side, smaller hose on the other. What gives?

Ha. I have never liked it either. Glad someone is really staying on top of new technology. That thing has been out for a couple of years now. Its just not catching on.....wonder why?

Yup, and the sides fold down, and those center sections of 2 1/2 can be slid out to load independantly as well. The idea is no one climbs anywhere on the truck.
A waste of space, weight, and money to me.

I've seen lots of sales promotion pictures of this "innovation" by Pierce. Does anyone know anyone that actually HAS one of these? Really would be curious to see how they actually work on a fireground, not a sales demo.
Awfully clean gear and hose in that picture... :D

Climb two steps to get up top and you have the same effect.
Loading a 4 or 5" flat lay is just about the easiest task in the service. :p
I'm waiting for a hydraulic arm with a manipulator to lay the hose while the bed lowers itself to the ground. :D

Not to mention one more moving part to break and have to keep paying to fix once it starts showing it's age.

I saw one of these on a demo, during the demo...it failed. While a hydraulic line can fail at any point in time..it would just be aggravating to know that because of the suit and tie, safety susies..your truck is now OOS, because you might get injured while loading hose.

How about how much weight that would be putting behind the rear axle? could it start to list the steering axle off the ground? also look's like you can't fit as much hose on it.

Like the time a boss got tired of us boat crews hanging around the wharf during shift change and expecting us to be either checking the boats out or walking up the hill?
One day after we'd decided to go back to our usual ways,Bossman showed up just as a truck full of face wires for a towboat that broke all of theirs arrived for us to take out.
Immediately,11 guys started waving and guiding the flatbed down the ramp onto the wharf.

My old department is always looking for new things for us lazy types, but we passed on this one because we'd rather have as much water on board as we could get.If we can't have 1,000 gallons,we'd take 850 and deep compartments for extra tool storage.
The Enforcer is a good chassis, though.Lots of room and quiet enough that you don't have to yell if you don't have a plug into the intercom.

"Water? Doh, I knew we forgot something. Good thing we got this lever to lift hydrants up out of the ground so we don't have to reach down and hook up to an outlet."
