BC - one of my officers dropped me the link this AM. is this a private firm? just the little bit I have read leads me to believe that there may be a purchasing commitment tied into this program - win the grant, get $, spend it with this firm, and oh by the way, the cost for the full whatever is $X more than the grant.....
just my Brooklyn roots (some one always trying to pull a fast one!) speaking.....

Target Safety is a private company, and there are no monetary awards. Only free training from the company for departments for 1 year. No purchase required.

Considering how inaccessible and expensive some types of online training can be I would hope more people are excited than are posting. Free is free, and considering how many people I deal with that say training is an issue this is one way to make improvements. Have to exercise the brain as well as the brawn.

My thoughts exactly Kurt, I'm sure some of my guys I have to play school teacher and stand over their shoulder and make them do it it, but a threat to clip their wings until they completed it would work I think :D
I talked it over with a few board members, they're all for it, to the point they'd be willing to put internet access in the station for the guys who don't have it at home.

Congrats there new Papa! You didn't tell us. :D
Mine hits 11 months in 12 days. Let me tell you how time flies. She went from rolling a little to crawling at warp speed in about 3 days. Now she's starting to walk. I'm going to need a homing beacon on her soon.
And first time Dada came out? I'll forget my name before I forget that.
Enjoy the little one and blessings to you and the Mrs.

I have now been through 2 boys, 2 girls. 1 Grandbaby that is
5. (voted best grandbaby in the world 5 times running!)
I can tell you this - after being there for the girls going through
16, now in their mid 20's..... Just wait, it does not get easier!
I can also tell you, that Grandbaby has been the best thing that
ever happened to me.... I have mellowed so much, some people
hate it - they figure I was going to stress out and have a heart
attack before, now I am going to be around for a loooooonnnngggg time!

Is anyone familiar with TargetSafety's service? We're applying for the grant but I was wondering if anyone has first hand experience with the company that they wanted to share? I know they have a partnership with the NFPA and IAFC but any details of how you're using the system would be welcome. Thanks.

Call Jacksonville FD, FL and speak with their training officers. They have been using it for a few years from what I understand and should be able to answer the questions for you first hand. I personally have no knowledge of them but, I work with Jacksonville FD and they should be able to fill you in if you have concerns. ;)

Kurt--no idea of the value of the one year subscription. On the other hand--something learned during that year could be priceless.
Lime--That travel stuff is jsut not for me. If we could hold seminars at my house, i'd think about it. Trouble with that--at my skill and knowledge level, i'd have a hard time making minimum wage!!

Congratulations JJBat and Catch22!!
When we received notification, i was concerned about what the reaction might be--most of our dept is FF 2, and at least Haz-mat Ops--plus we were in the middle of an EVOC course. Two months in and a few have gone through all 12 courses, most have done at least 3 or 4. The feedback has been very positive so far. A bigger surprise to me so far--the Back Injury course has been one that our people talk about learning from and glad they went through it. Not surprising--i think i may be the one that has the least progress, but with grant season slowing--i'll get there!!

My dept was one of the winners of this grant. I think it is a great program. Here are a few questions though;
1. How often do they ad new training? I can see running out of classes very quick.
2. We always include a few mutial aid depts with our training. Can I set up members from other depts to use the program?
3. Will Pennslyvania accept this as "real" fire training? I know that any training is great, even if you dont get a diploma but is the certificate worth the paper its printed on?
Thanks
Bruce

Now that's interesting. We don't have a back injury course, but we've got 24 courses available.
The guys have been real good about it. I let them know and I started getting emails asking to get started. They're going at it faster than I can get people added!

When we applied, i only asked for 12 courses, thinking that one-a-month would be tough enough to get our firefighters to do. With the response we had, 18 to 24 would not have been too much. In course selection, we did a few EMS, some OSHA and some FF courses so there was something for everybody.
Ramfire--You select the courses either when you apply or reply to your e-mail announcement (seems like i should remember, but i don't). Once we were awarded, i passed it off to our Asst Chief, 'cuz he doubles as training officer. It also helps that he can order people to do things--i can only suggest. :D :D

Add us to the list. I recieved e-mail last Friday. Doesn't look like a whole lot to set up. Once you give the web address to the members, they can set up thier own account. All I have to do is keep track of the training (at least, I think so.....new to this thingy). Congrats to everyone else with good news.
p.s. I don't remember asking for specific questions when I applied. When we were awarded, they gave us the web address with the questions already on it.

Congratulations to everyone who won! I'm with TargetSafety and I thought I'd answer a few questions. Please let me know if you have any others. I'd be happy to help.
1. How often do they ad new training? I can see running out of classes very quick.
We currently offer over 180 courses and we develop over thirty new courses every year (over 22 so far this year). The system also allows the client to host their own content, powerpoints, documents, etc, online as well. The current course library consists of Firefighter training, Fire Officer training, EMS training, OSHA, Compliance, Human Resource, Safety, Occupational health, FEMA, Homeland Security, Emergency Vehicle Operator, HAZMAT, Supervisor training, NFPA 1500 and more.
2. We always include a few mutial aid depts with our training. Can I set up members from other depts to use the program?
Yes, you can – there’s a fee per person.
3. Will Pennsylvania accept this as "real" fire training? I know that any training is great, even if you dont get a diploma but is the certificate worth the paper its printed on?
We're working on this now with some of our current PA fire customers. It's a great state to trial this with all the V/FF’s. On the EMS side we were actually approved to in Penn to provide EMS CE hours online (up to 100%). We're one of two, (they don't even consider CECBEMS). We were approved by the state.

WOW, thank you guys very much. We're very glad we can give back.
Kurt, you're the man! Thanks for your help on this. You've helped us a ton. We ended up giving out over $1.5 million. Each department will recieve a letter in the mail with the total $ figure. Our service is usually around $100 p/ff plus one-time set up for the department but we decided to do an even $75 for the volunteer and combination departments who won the grant so we could get more people trained. That price will be available (no-set up fee either) for the following year as well. Over 180 courses will be included in that package.
I don't think we're done...let's do it again!

Amen Brother!! That's one of the things i've enjoyed about CEDAP as well, at least when RKBManager's hands are untied. In the case of Target Safety, if they're wiling to help out on the ones they give awy (thanks kyle!!)--you just gotta figure that the paying customer is going to be taken care of also.
The response from our members has been absolutely positive. I thought i was going to hear a complaint one night when one of our guys started by saying that an EMS course he took made him spend more time in the material before testing--then he went on to talk about the information he had picked up in the additional time he was forced to read. That was cool.
I'm impressed with the way our members have embraced the courses, and all are pleased with the content.
