If anyone is intersted, My fire dpartment is going to host a grant writing Seminar on January 20 and 21st of 2007. I have been trying to find a seminar on the Northeast part of the US, but was unable to do so. So we decided to host one. If anyone is interested or wants more details, please email me from my profile. Stay Safe!!

Started to e-mail you then figured that this is a question that others may want to know the answer to:

Where are you located in Pennsylvania?

Tried looking on your profile and it is not listed....

This seminar will be held in the banquet hall of our fire department. This is the Alum Bank Community Fire Company in Alum Bank, PA 15521. We are located about 12 miles northwest of the Bedford,PA exit on the PA turnpike. We are about 30 miles south of Altoona and about 25 miles southeast of Johnstown. Let me know if you need any more information

It will be a grant seminar based around the fire service and the grants we are usually going for: AFG, Cedap, Fire prevention and Safety, etc. The presenter will be Kurt Bradley. Email me from my profile if you would like to receive information.

Some of you have requested information about this seminar, but I am getting failure notices back because your inbox is too full. Please trash some of your junk emails to receive the info. Also, I am noticing people that are close to each other showing interest in this seminar. You may want to start posting on this thread if you are planning on attending and your general location so carpolling may be established. Just trying to help all of you out. Thank you for the interests I have received so far. I look forward to meeting you.

Glad to see lots of folks interested in taking that extra step to get more knowledge about everything. Western PA is going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2007. Small world, I got invited to Westmoreland County this week for a trip in February. There's going to be lots of Pittsburgh area folks happy around these forums next year. :)

Which is good because they won't be from the Steelers efforts. :D

See I'm an Eagles fan, I learned years ago not to get my hopes up...

I am a TRUE BLACK and GOLD fan. Never count the Steelers out until it is mathematically impossible for them to do something, and even then be careful. I may get the opportunity to make the trip to Baltimore this weekend to see the game. Patiently waiting for the phone call. It kind of reminds me of this grant program stuff!!! Cant say anything bad about the Eagles now that TO is gone. I like the fact that they could possibly see each other in the big game some day.

Did anyone see those Cowboys today? :D

That would be cool if you made the trip. It's fun going to away games. We went to Dallas a couple of years back to see the Eagles there. I think half the place was green.

I'm with you on tossing TO. He is one of those that it's nice to see come, but only stay for a little while before leaving. He stayed too long. He can play the game, but his numbers would be twice what they are now if he caught the ball with his big mouth. No one could defend against him then. :)

Who are the Cowboys???? LOL. Sorry SLY. Just had to say it. If you come to our seminar, PLEASE do not wear a TO jersey. Any other player is fine, but please not a TO!!

Still no news on my tickets for Sunday at Baltimore. Would I qualify for Earls therapy on the other thread??

Cowboys?! From a Chester County guy no less. Explains the blue trucks... ;)

We're still celebrating the Texans beating the Cowboys in their 1st pro game ever. Of course not much has happened since then to celebrate over...

Easy on those blue trucks.....

We really like those blue trucks from PA down here in MO!
Can't beat the donations!

Heck, we even ordered a NEW truck that will be blue - from
a PA manufacturer!

tomcook18, Email me from my public profile and I will send you the information if you need. Also, have Jeremy email me if he already hasn't so I may get the info to him also.

gmattox, If you have never been to Alum Bank, you do not know what you are missing. Not much night life here, but we usually travel to Altoona, Bedford, or Johnstown for the "nightlife". It all depends on what you like to do.

Whoa! Do you have one of our old trucks?

Many Fire Departments down here in our area exist today because of the kindness of departments like Grapeville, North Braddock, Elgin Beaverdam,
and others in PA and NJ, and their donations of yellow, blue, red trucks!

Not to mention Airpacks, AED's, etc...

One of the reasons we let Fire Departments on our radio
towers for their repeaters at no cost...

I forgot to mention on the nightlife issue that our fire hall is located about 10 miles from Blue Knob if any of you are interested in skiing after the saturday afternoon seminar.

Thank you for that information SLY. I emailed most of the Pennsylvania EMA directors and Commissioner Mann with the information about the seminar and ask them to forward it to anyone that may be interested. Timing is going to be crucial because the seating is limited and will be on a first come first served basis. Just so you guys on the forum know, I told you all about it first!! Also, for those people that are planning on attending, I have a list of hotels, motels, and bed-and-breakfasts that offer housing. There is a small motel beside our firehall, but I do not know what it will cost. I hear it is not real fancy, but is kept clean. If you want the rest of the list, drop me an email. Thanks again SLY. Hope to meet you in January!!

I thinking that I'll have to end up with the Verizon broadband card myself. Looks like I'll be on the road from Jan 6 - March 11. At least the weekends if I don't end up with a bunch of weeknight dates too. Buddy of mine has the Verizon card and swears by it. Anywhere the phone words the card works. He's been a few places where dial-up wasn't even available and was surfing along. Kinda proud at $60 a month, but if you live off of it then well worth it.

While I agree on the necessity of the internet connection, just tell me the closest one to the best local bar. I'm ready to book. :D

I have a Verizon card through my work. The only problem with that is I guarantee that its going to be NationalAccess out there, not Broadband Access. That basically gives you dial up speed. True, you get it anywhere. But its annoying that I get Broadband speed through it at work, I can get Broadband access a town away, but at home I have to use National access. What a difference an air mile makes.

BC79er
12-04-2006, 11:13 AM
I'd probably still be aiming for hotels that have free high speed, at worst even if it's just wireless high speed in the lobby it beats dial-up. But even some of the better chains don't have high speed at all in the more populous areas where you'd expect it. Have to check the map more closely to see what coverage is where. Might end up in Williamsport in early Jan, but doubt I could get it past the CFO (Mrs) by then. :)

Only dial-up I have now is the free Netzero in cases of extreme web withdrawel, so dial-up on the Verizon wouldn't be all that bad. At least it wouldn't have ads.

I just registered for the grant seminar in Alum Bank. Coming in from Johnstown, it wont be a far trip. Kurt has been so much help in obtaining grants for us..3/5, but I want to learn more. Our mutual aid departments are signing up today also. Should be a great time. If you have never worked with Kurt, I highly suggest you attend. At my dept., even after getting a bunch of grants, no discussion was needed when I asked to attend...it was just a big YES...go to the seminar.

We regret to inform you that you will not be funded this year!! Oh and by the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Well this Pennsylvania department will not be receiving the grant this year either.

I feel that the grant seminar Kurt will be bringing to our department will help us out next year. If there are any other departments out there that would like information, drop me a line from my profile. He already showed me places where my narrative was in need of definite repair!! BRING IT ON KURT!!!!!

I would love to go to this Grant Seminar BUT our fire company will not go for it. Way to much money. I could not believe it. Spend what 500 bucks for the seminor and a room and food for a good in sight on how to get more then the afg grants is worth it but not in their eyes. They think because I got us a grant this year (first try and its a winner) that we(I) dont need the training. News for them is I dont go into a fire with out training and I am not going to do this anymore with out some type of training.
Its a same but its the truth.

I have been successful 3 out of 5 times, and my department overwhelmingly approved my attendance. I didn't even have to explain. The minute I said "I would like to go to a grant..." It was approved. If you get information on how to write one successful grant, its worth it. Maybe your leaders should start reading this forum.

I was looking forward to meeting you Vulture. I think one things you need to explain to them is that the first grant is the easiest. It will get harder and harder to justify your projects. The first grant we applied for was in 2002 and was awarded $52,000. Since then, we have gone 0 for 5 including a FPS grant in 2002. I even used the same narrative with some basic changes thinking it would go through. I guess the other thing to mention is the fact that the $500 you would need for everything is a drop in the bucket compared to its benefits if awarded $25,000, $50,000, or who knows how much over the next few years you may receive.

I agree with imafireman here. If you are having trouble coming up with the $500, try checking with some local businesses or organizations who may be willing to help you out.

$500 for a load of knowledge to get you up to a $1M grant award? Yeah, ok.

I talked to my city admin about bringing Kurt out here to Hawarden, Iowa. I mentioned that we will have to abuse the office printer and buy some supplies and spend $250 on top of that for me to attend. Considering the price of SCBAs, trucks and turnout gear the $250 - $500 was a no brainer.

For those that are interested Kurt will be out here in Hawarden, Iowa Feb 23 - 24th. For those that are wondering where in the heck is Hawarden it is in the northwest corner of Iowa on the SD border. You can PM me or email me for more info.

Vulture, if you're Eastern PA drop me an email. I'll know what my tour schedule of PA, NJ, and DE is within the next day or two. 4-5 total workshops, locations/dates still in the works but odds are January for all of them. In eastern NY then too, don't know what's closer to y'all. Single digit price might be easier to convince the dept to pony up.

Feb is north-central, nothing like IA and MN in the winter. I think Kurt and I need to just do workshops in the Carribean. :D Yeah, that's the ticket...

You guys are just cruel. I believe that those of you staying at the best western have a breakfast buffet in their cafe area. If I read their ad correctly, it should be free or discounted. My idea of breakfast is a nice big healthy jelly filled donut and a quart of chocolate milk!!

If you guys want to grab a snack and talk a bit Friday evening, I figure Wendy's which is at the Turnpike interchange behind Sheetz's would be a good place to meet. Or, If you would like to get a meal, the Landmark in downtown Bedford has an exellent all-you-can-eat fish fry for around $10 including beverage. I believe most of you will be in around 7, so we could plan on that, but as most of you know in the fire service, plans may change.

And just because I appreciate all of you coming, your lunches will be provided at the seminar site both days. Even if I have to microwave them myself!!!

To those of you that are coming in Friday evening for the seminar, if you would like, I will meet up with you to go grab a bite to eat. I figure either fast food or a sit down restaurant. There is a place in town with all-you-can-eat fish Friday night. What are your thoughts and which would you rather do? Majority wins. Also, lunches will be provided by a sponsor as well as some morning snacks. I plan to meet those of you who would like to, around 6:30, in the parking area (Hoss's) across from the turnpike exit in Bedford. I will most likely be in an Ambulance style squad with Alum Bank on the side.
