I am just curious who all hires EMT's outside of the fire dept. I will soon be done with my EMT certification and wondering what other places I could apply at for a job other than the fire dept where I am a volunteer... Hospitals, clinics?

Several places do. FDs will along with ambulance services, some ERs, and industrial settings. Just depends on where you are and what is available.

I work for a contract security company in industry. Many manufacturing facilities contract out for EMT and nursing services. As an contract EMT/Security Officer I work alongside regular SOs and perform similar duties such as monitoring cameras, access control and security patrols. In addition to those duties I respond to all medical calls inside the plant and transport patients as necessary to the local ER. We also have an onsite clinic where I treat minor medical and trama cases as well as do drug screens (pee tests) on employees involved in accidents or who damage property. I can be applying ice to a sprain one minute and then a employee walks in with a cut hand which needs cleaning and bandageing. Finish that and there's a guy who had some bad tacos for dinner and he's in the clinic looking for some Imodium. Work boots and OSHA eyeglasses are issued through the medical clinic and I am responsible to getting those items to the right employees too.
There are plenty of EMT jobs out there outside of fire departments if you are willing to look for them.

Where do you live? In NC several 911 EMS Agencies (including Mecklenburg County EMS) hire EMTs. Also, most hospital based Critical Care Transport Units hire EMTs as Drivers/helpers. For the most part, all you'd do is help load patients, plan routes, and drive.

Private ambulance companies -- depending on just where you are and how far you're willing to drive, Rural/Metro, AMR and Trimed, all doing a mixture of interfacility and 911 transports.

Some places with security guards like to get people who are cross-trained as EMTs but I don't know how official it is -- if they actually have a medical director and so on. The Woodland Park Zoo is one.

Some ERs will hire EMTs as techs, but usually you have to have experience in the field first.

So for you experts who have been in this field awhile should I start looking for work about a month or so before I get my certification? I am a college student who is wanting to look into becoming a full time firefighter/ems and wanting to start out with EMS stuff... How easy is it to get a job at say AMR places like that once you are certified?

I don't know about other places but most privates around me are just looking for a license, pulse, and decent driving record

McDonalds, and I don't think you even need your EMT for them.

If you want to use your EMT but may not want to be on an ambulance. Check Zoo, Amusement Parks,or Doctor offices. Several of our Doctors offices use EMT's to do the "check in" at the doctors office. V/S, chief complaints.

I'm glad I entered this thread cuz I had the same question as Dangerranger...
So lets say I'm searching the web for EMT jobs...what would I type in GOogle or Yahoo? I've tried "EMT Jobs" but I havent found anything for CA. I even went to Careerbuilder and Monster but no luck.
I'm not interested in being a FF, just want to be an EMT before I become an RN. any advice?

ER departments ussually hire techs to do the basic functions. Ask around at the local hospitals and see if they need ER Techs.
