Teen charged after setting home on fire while 'doodling' with
lighter :eek:
HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A teenage boy living near Binghamton
might want to do his doodling with a pen instead of a lighter.
Police in the town of Colesville say the teenager's
"absent-minded doodling" with a lighter got out of hand early
this morning and he set his home on fire
Authorities say as the 16-year-old boy chatted with a friend on
the phone around 3 a-m, he repeatedly flicked a lighter next to a
wall.
The wall ignited and the youth enlisted the help of another
teenage boy to try to extinguish the blaze.
When they couldn't put the fire out, they alerted other family
members, who called the fire department to the home. Everyone made
it safely out of the house.
A sheriff's department investigator says the teen was charged
with felony arson because while the fire wasn't intentionally set,
his actions were reckless.
The detective said it seemed to be a case of absent-mindedness,
saying it's "not like he's an evil kid trying to torch his
house."
