View Full Version : JonBenet's real killer?

Well, we have already been mass-media'ed to death with this whacko in Thailand who claims he "accidentally" killed JonBenet Ramsey. But already there are a lot of conflicts in what he's saying with what is publicly known about the case, so the possibility exists that he's full of crap and did not kill her.

So who thinks he did it, and who thinks he's an attention freak?

:( Personal opinion of course, but I think this guy wants out of Thailand fast.. who'd want to languish in a Thai jail when there are those comfy all amenities offered U.S. ones.. As to whether he did it, no way, guys a nut job... some are saying he's never even travelled to Colorado, just spent a lot of time studying the case. :(

I am undecided on if this guy could be the answer. He has been sending letters to the Ramsey's and a Journalist here at CU for some time. This doesn't appear to be a stunt to avoid time in jail in Thailand on a different charge. I also don't think that the investigators would be so quick to nab this guy if they didn't have SOME evidence that it might even be likely he did it (travel receipts to Boulder, DNA, matching the video from the hardware store where the rope was bought, etc.).

All I know is the media circus is back in town! Satellite trucks are everywhere!

The only sure thing at this point given all the conflicting stories from the ex-wife, was he ever in Boulder, trying to say he was involved in the Polly Klass murder, etc., is that this guy is a complete whack job.

It's a long flight from Thailand.......point him to the door of the airplane and have him take that LONG first step and be done with it.

First off, why oh why did this fruitloop have to be from Alabama! :o :(

Hopefully, they've got a lot more evidence on him because right now it sure doesn't sound like he's Ramsey killer to me. Notwithstanding that case, if the media reports are close to accurate, he's a freak that's into messing with young girls so I don't care what happens to him in a Thai or US jail.

It's here now. Was it moved?

As for this nut job, I'm really not sure what to make of him. Count me among the folks waiting to see the DNA results. I think they had to arrest him because he said just enough that he was a safety risk -- even though he was overseas. Now that they have him detained, they'll sort through what they have. Sure, it sounds sort of backwards... But this isn't a guy you want teaching your kids. Hell, this isn't a guy you want teaching anyone's kids.

And no evidence of rape either, Brian. Although there was semen found on her body, or at the scene, if I remember correctly. No, I haven't finished reading the following article to confirm that yet, so my comments are my thoughts based only on the bits and pieces of news I've heard on the radio since the story broke.

I always thought the dad did it.

If the DNA matches Karr, then it would appear to be likely he is/could be the killer.

I came across this timeline as I was googling the correct spelling of her name, if anyone is interested.

She seems to be known as both Jon Bonet and JonBenet.

Report: Suspect knew secrets of JonBenet crime
Updated Fri. Aug. 18 2006 6:42 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

John Mark Karr knew secret, graphic details about the condition of JonBenet Ramsey's body when authorities arrested him this week in Thailand, according to a new report.

The details that Karr shared with authorities were only known by the investigators on the case and the medical examiner, an unnamed law enforcement official told CNN Friday.

The news shores-up Karr's claim that he was with Ramsey when she died. His admission has been in doubt after glaring discrepancies emerged between his version of events and what investigators claim took place.

Meanwhile, Karr is awaiting deportation to the United States as questions mount over his stunning confession to the decade-old slaying.

Karr's surprise arrest in Bangkok on Wednesday has raised questions over whether his admissions were those of a killer or merely someone obsessed with the case of the six-year-old beauty queen.

Karr, 41, told U.S. investigators that he picked JonBenet up at school, drugged and raped her before accidentally killing her in Colorado in 1996, Thai police Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul said Thursday after he was briefed about the interview.

But there are jarring discrepancies between reports of Karr's confessions and established facts:

Though Karr claims he picked the girl up at school, schools were closed for the Christmas break when she died.
An autopsy conducted on the body of JonBenet found no trace of drug and while it described vaginal abrasions, made no conclusions about whether she was raped.
Few experts believe the girl, who was slowly strangled with a garrote, was killed accidentally.
His ex-wife Lara cast further doubt on his story when she told KGO-TV in San Francisco that he was with her in Alabama during the entire Christmas season that year.

"She cannot think of a Christmas while they were together when he was away from the family on Christmas day or immediately thereafter," said her attorney, Michael Rains, though he added his client could not specifically recall Christmas 1996.

But Thai police have denied U.S. media reports that Karr claimed he had drugged JonBenet, and also dismissed reports that he had picked her up from school.

"He said he did not drug her. He said he wants the world to know the truth. He asked for another press conference," a Thai police interrogator who had been with Karr in his cell told Reuters.

It was not clear whether Karr's request would be granted. Thai officials said they were preparing to get him out of the country as soon as this weekend.

Karr almost met JonBenet's mother

Any previous relationship between Karr and the Ramseys remains shrouded in mystery, though both have ties to suburban Atlanta.

Karr told AP on Thursday that he had written letters to JonBenet's mother Patsy Ramsey before she died of ovarian cancer in June. He said that he wrote to her about "many things."

Lin Wood, an attorney for the Ramsey family, said Patsy Ramsey handed that information over to investigators, which helped to link Karr to the case.

Officials had then asked Patsy Ramsey in May whether she would meet with Karr to help their investigation. One month later she died of cancer, so the meeting never took place.

But according to Wood, investigators posed as Patsy Ramsey and continued the correspondence with Karr.

"He thought that he was corresponding with Patsy, but he wasn't," Wood told The Associated Press.

Wood also said Karr reportedly sent a number of e-mails to University of Colorado professor Michael Tracey, who produced a documentary in 2004, called Who Killed JonBenet?

In those e-mails, some of them reprinted Friday in Colorado's Rocky Mountain News, Karr made comments about the death of the six-year-old beauty pageant star.

But in one e-mail, he claimed to be under investigation for "child murder and child molestation" in four states, when no such investigation existed.

Investigation leads to child-killer

Officials at California's San Quentin State Prison searched the cell of child-killer Richard Allen Davis on Thursday, acting on a tip that he may have corresponded with Karr.

Davis is awaiting execution for the death of 12-year-old Polly Klass, who he murdered in 1993.

In 2001, when California police charged Karr with misdemeanour possession of child pornography, he told detectives he had received a letter from Davis and planned to write a book about the killer.

Lieut. Eric Messick told AP that officials hoped any such correspondence might offer clues in the JonBenet investigation.

"Our reasoning was that if there was evidence of them having this relationship, then it might shed some light on things -- it wasn't a far reach," he said.

"But I don't think we've found anything so far suggesting there was a nexus between Davis, Karr and JonBenet Ramsey. Obviously Richard Allen Davis was in prison at that time."

'Obsessed by the case'

The father of Karr, Wexford Karr, told the Denver Post his son had been so interested in the JonBenet case that he wanted to write a book about it.

"It's clear to me that he's somewhat interested or maybe even obsessed by the case and the real question is whether he's inserting himself into it for some obscure psychological reason," Carlton Smith, who wrote 1997's Death of a Little Princess: The Tragic Story of the Murder of JonBenet Ramsey, told AP.

DNA evidence found beneath JonBenet's fingernails and inside her underwear will likely be key in determining whether Karr is guilty in her death, say legal experts.

Karr was given a mouth-swab DNA test in Bangkok, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The results of that test were not known.

Karr will be given another DNA test when he returns to the United States in the next several days, the official said.

Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy suggested Karr's arrest came sooner than she would have liked, prompted by "exigent circumstances," and said more work remained to be done in the case.

Karr started teaching second grade in a Bangkok school on Tuesday and investigators would have liked more time to develop evidence, said Lacy.

In June, he taught first graders at Bangkok Christian College, regarded as one of the city's top private schools. But he was apparently dismissed after two weeks when parents complained he was too strict with their children.

JonBenet was found strangled, her skull fractured, in the basement of her family's Boulder, Colorado home on Boxing Day, 1996.

The girl's body was found by her father hours after her mother stumbled on a bizarre, three-page letter claiming she had been kidnapped for $118,000 ransom.

Personally, I find the crime and pedophilia disgusting.

But I cannot help over the past 10 years thinking....What in the hell is it about this case that keeps it coming back?

Why is this one 6 year old (Rich, Caucasian, attractive) kid so much more important than the other kids that have died?

I have just gotten sick of it all. It could be my bitterness and cynicism, but for crying out loud......Why is this one incident more important than all the others?

Just drives me nuts - just like the whole Laci Peterson, and all the other murders that get all the press. This one case is so much more important nationally than any of the other murders that occured in another city across the country?

Oh yeah, I doubt that this knucklehad did it.

Couldn't agree with you more. Disagree with Bill Maher but I heard him say once that when he hears 'breaking news' he is 99% certain it will be "attractive, white, female' missing.

About ten years ago there was a local case of a Raider's cheerleader named Linda Sobek (http://www.cnn.com/US/9611/01/briefs.pm/model.murder/) who was missing and ultimately found murdered. It is a tragic story to be sure, but the media attention was incredible to say the least.

I do agree with you to a point, however, there was the case of the young black girl named Erika Green(Precious Doe)that sparked a lot of media attention.

Therer are hundreds of missing kids each year - many we never hear about - the ones we do are cases that the media knows will draw attention and sell papers.

Like the Ramsey,Precious Doe and Peterson cases they were unique enough to make them "sellable"(if thats a word).

Agree with you-maybe this well adjusted upstanding citizen, is or was due to be "snapped" by the Thai Police for something he thought they were onto in the kiddie field--(now unlike OJ who got a get out of jail card and a new pair of gloves--the last young American male who vandalised a car in Thailand, got a little tune up with a rattan--apparently he was not over keen on this). So if you are not guilty of the little girls murder, but can get out of the clutches of the Thai police, what a quick exit!

Or am I being a tad cynical?

I just dont understand why America has these pedophille magnets that you call child beauty queen pageants. You are taking a 10 year old and dressing them up with make-up and stuff. It is just asking for your child to be exposed to as many sickos as possible.
I was watching a show yesterday and they had a lady on it whose child has been competing in them since she was four years old and i got shocked by two things:
1. The photo that they showed of the girl was a portrait style photo and she looked about 23-25 years old. (it was only the head) I thought it was a vain photo of the mother whom they had on satellite phone.
2. The lady thought that there was no way that her child could be exposed to pedophilles in these contests. Im sorry but apart from the parents/family and a few members of the press i am willing to bet that the rest of the ticket holders at those shows are creeps.
Just my five cents (we dont have anything smaller than a five cent coin over here)

Sorry PattyV--but at aged 10 these children would be well past their sell by date!
Like you I see these littlie's who are still in nappies(diapers for USA residents) with the really pushy mothers, trying to pass them off as 2ft high Paris Hiltons.
Not all the sicko's are in the audience-most of them are the parents--wonder when the first breast implants will be done on a 4yr old?

JonBenet murder suspect back in U.S.

LOS ANGELES -- John Mark Karr's return to the United States took him from clinking his champagne glass during a luxurious flight over the Pacific to a high-security jail where he was awaiting a transfer to face charges in JonBenet Ramsey's murder.

Los Angeles police detained Karr on a warrant from Boulder County, Colorado, after he arrived in California from Bangkok, Thailand, and turned him over to the county Sheriff's Department late Sunday, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

A helicopter brought him from the airport to the sheriff's Twin Towers jail shortly before midnight in a sobering end to a day that began in Bangkok and included champagne and fine dining aboard a Thai Airways flight.

"He is going to be housed here in the men's jail, kept in isolation in a 6-by-9-foot (1.8-by-2.7 metre) room with a bed, a toilet no windows and no phones," Whitmore said. "He'll get regular food. He'll get jail chow, he won't get king crab, I'll tell you that."

Karr was to be held in a "high power" cell for noteworthy inmates, checked by guards every 15 minutes, and separated from other inmates who often target suspected child molesters, sheriff's officials said.

Boulder County authorities said Karr was expected to have an extradition hearing in Los Angeles within days, and would be taken to Colorado if he waived extradition. No hearing date was immediately set.

Karr, who last week suddenly emerged as a suspect in a case long believed to have gone cold, told reporters in Thailand that he was with 6-year-old JonBenet when she died in the basement of her home on Dec. 26, 1996, but that her death was an accident.

U.S. officials have been silent about what Karr told them during interrogations.

The 41-year-old school teacher's return to the United States was voluntary, and he was not handcuffed before or during the 15-hour flight.

Dressed in a red, short-sleeve, button-down shirt and black tie, Karr was whisked through Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok. He chatted with fellow passengers at the departure gate.

Aboard the jet he took a window seat next to Mark Spray, an investigator with the Boulder County district attorney's office. The escort also included a U.S. Embassy official and an agent with "Homeland Security" on his shirt.

Before takeoff, Karr took a glass of champagne from a flight attendant and clinked glasses with Spray, who sipped orange juice.

Karr first dined on pate, salad, fried king prawn, steamed rice, broccoli and chocolate cake. He also had a beer -- crushing the empty can with his hands -- and then had a glass of French chardonnay.

Karr appeared to order the drinks himself.

He later dined on roast duck with soy sauce and yellow noodles, and for his third meal had pizza, chocolates and a bottle of Evian.

He sometimes conversed with Spray, who took notes on some of the remarks. Karr told an AP reporter that it was "small talk."

Also during the flight, Karr flipped through movie channels, watched The Last Samurai, dozed and made several trips to the restroom accompanied by two guards. Each time the door was left slightly ajar.

At one point he changed out of the red shirt and tie, replacing them with a blue polo, but then changed back into the shirt and tie before the landing.

Hours before Karr's departure, a doctor at a Bangkok clinic specializing in sex-change surgery said Karr had come in for treatment.

"He was one of my patients," Dr. Thep Vechavisit of the Pratunam Polyclinic said. He refused to provide further details.

Bangkok, where Karr lived on and off for two years, is regarded as a centre for sex change operations. The Pratunam clinic advertises sex-change surgery for $1,625 US - a bargain compared to U.S. prices, where male-to-female reassignment surgery can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Karr, once detained on charges of possessing child pornography, in recent years apparently travelled to Europe, Central America and Asia to search for teaching jobs. He taught in at least two Thai schools.

They have to justify their budgets and million dollar salaries for reading the news SOMEHOW,right?
So they lead with sensational stories to increase viewership and ad revenue.

Bones, OJ was found not guilty (Criminally) but guilty (civilly). Hmmmmm, who to believe.

And as it was mentioned, LEGALLY you are innocent until proven guilty - but in the court of public opinion it is different. No boundaries there.

But it still must be a slow news day when this guy is the lead story while wars rip across the world, people are stabbed and shot in the streets, and a single person who may or may not have killed and sodomized a 6 year old girl 10 years ago is more important.

What in the hell has happened to society?

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors abruptly dropped their case
Monday against John Mark Karr in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey,
saying DNA tests failed to put him at the crime scene despite his
insistence he sexually assaulted and strangled the 6-year-old
beauty queen.
Just a week and a half after Karr's arrest in Thailand was seen
as a remarkable break in the sensational, decade-old case,
prosecutors suggested in court papers that he was just a man with a
twisted fascination with JonBenet who confessed to a crime he
didn't commit.
"The people would not be able to establish that Mr. Karr
committed this crime despite his repeated insistence that he did,"
District Attorney Mary Lacy said in court papers.
The 41-year-old schoolteacher will be kept in jail in Boulder
until he can be sent to Sonoma County, Calif., to face child
pornography charges dating to 2001. An extradition hearing was
scheduled for Tuesday.
The district attorney vowed to keep pursuing leads in JonBenet's
death: "This case is not closed."
Karr was never formally charged in the slaying. In court papers,
Lacy defended the decision to arrest him and bring him back to the
United States for further investigation, saying he might have
otherwise fled and may have been targeting children in Thailand as
well.
Lacy said Karr emerged as a suspect in April after he spent
several years exchanging e-mails and later telephone calls with a
University of Colorado journalism professor who had produced
documentaries on the Ramsey case.
According to court papers, Karr told the professor he
accidentally killed JonBenet during sex and that he tasted her
blood after he injured her vaginally. But the Denver crime lab
conducted DNA tests last Friday on a cheek swab taken from Karr and
were unable to connect him to the crime.
"This information is critical because ... if Mr. Karr's account
of his sexual involvement with the victim were accurate, it would
have been highly likely that his saliva would have been mixed with
the blood in the underwear," Lacy said in court papers.
She also said authorities found no evidence Karr was in Boulder
at the time of the slaying. She said Karr's family provided
"strong circumstantial support" for their belief that he was with
them in Georgia, celebrating the Christmas holidays. JonBenet was
found beaten and strangled at her Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996.
Defense attorney Seth Temin expressed outrage that Karr was even
arrested.
"We're deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man
and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic
evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent
factors leading to a presumption he did anything wrong," Temin
said.
In an interview Monday with MSNBC, Gary Harris, who had been
spokesman for the Karr family, said he knew the DNA would not
match.
Karr has been "obsessed with this case for a long time. He may
have some personality problems, but he's not a killer," Harris
said. "He obsesses. He wanted to be a rock star one time. ... He's
a dreamer. He's the kind of guy who wants to be famous."
Earlier this month, Ramsey family attorney Lin Wood pronounced
Karr's arrest vindication for JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy
Ramsey, who had long been suspected in the killing.
On Monday, the attorney said: "From day one, John Ramsey
publicly stated that he did not want the public or the media to
jump to judgment. He did not want the public or the media to engage
in speculation, that he wanted the justice system to take its
course."
Wood said he still has great confidence in the district
attorney. Patsy Ramsey died of cancer in June.
JonBenet Ramsey's aunt, Pamela Paugh, said she was disappointed
there won't be a prosecution of someone in the case, but added: "I
think our justice system worked as it was supposed to."
"We asked the DA to do her thing. She did it," said Paugh, who
is Patsy Ramsey's sister. "My disappointment came about the end of
December 1996 when we didn't have the killer then. We've had 9½
years of disappointment and waiting."
Nate Karr, John Karr's brother, said he was elated by the news.
"We're just going to be celebrating with family," he said.
Colorado Gov. Bill Owens blasted prosecutors for wasting
thousands of taxpayer dollars to bring Karr to Colorado given such
a lack of evidence. The district attorney "should be held
accountable for the most extravagant and expensive DNA test in
Colorado history," he said.
Scott Robinson, a Denver attorney who has followed the case from
the beginning, said prosecutors may now be back at square one in
the JonBenet case. He said Karr may be charged with lying about his
role in the case.
"Seems to me there should be some criminal consequences," he
said. "He has cost the taxpayers an enormous amount of money."
Karr was arrested in Petaluma, Calif., in 2001 on charges of
possessing child pornography but fled before he could be tried.
Colorado authorities said that after the Boulder case against Karr
was dropped, California officials asked that he be turned over to
them for prosecution.
In court papers, prosecutors said Karr began exchanging e-mails
with professor Michael Tracey in 2002, signing them "D" and later
"Daxis." The meaning of "Daxis" was not immediately clear.
At first, Karr seemed to be just someone with an intense
interest in the case, but he soon claimed responsibility for the
crime, and provided more and more detail about that night,
according to court papers. He claimed that he accidentally killed
JonBenet during sexual activity that included temporarily
asphyxiating her, prosecutors said.
He began telling his story in hopes of being included in a book
Tracey was planning to publish, according to the court papers.
Authorities eventually traced his calls and identified Daxis as
Karr, prosecutors said.
"Are you asking me why I killed JonBenet? I don't see it that
way," Karr wrote in a May 22 e-mail. "Her and I were engaging in
a romantic and very sexual interaction. It went bad and it was my
fault."
The DA's office late Monday provided hours of discussion and
pages of grisly details from Karr's correspondence with professor
Michael Tracey, who alerted authorities.
Karr described how he hung JonBenet with a rope and slowly
strangled her to put her in a "dream-like state" before
performing oral sex. He said he tasted her blood after the sex went
too far and tried to revive her when he realized she was dead.
"I loved her so much and I am so sorry that she died in my
arms," Karr wrote to the professor in May. "If anyone came close
to screaming, it was I. ... 'Please don't leave me. I love you so
much. Oh, babydoll, please come back to me!"'
During a July 15 telephone call with Tracey that lasted 100
minutes, Karr - going by the alias Daxis - said he placed a new
"necklace around the throat of the child." The garrote was
loosened and tightened, and JonBenet stopped breathing.
"Daxis explained again that due to the twitching of JonBenet he
was concerned she might be brain dead but her body could continue
to survive," according to a summary of the call in the 98-page
arrest affidavit. "He did not want JonBenet to suffer, so he
struck her in the head with a flashlight he brought with him."
The district attorney said there was no way to take a cheek swab
from Karr without alerting him that he was under investigation, and
that would have created an "unacceptable risk that he would
flee."
Also, Karr was about to start a teaching job in Thailand, and in
his correspondence began to describe an interest in several girls
"in much the same terms that he had described his interest in
JonBenet," Lacy said in court papers.
In a July 19 e-mail, Karr described feeling excited to have two
5-year-olds "flashing their hot little bellybuttons at me" and
later how a "naked little foot felt so sexy in my hand."
Authorities confirmed he was involved with at least one of the
girls, Lacy said.

Well, with any luck the child porn charges and possibly some more regarding flight to avoid prosecution will get this guy away from the rest of us for a good while.

I really don't think so. At the most I suspected that he might have gotten into some cross business dealings and knew more than he was letting on, but I do not now, nor have I ever, thought the dad did it.

I just don't know who did.
