New Veteran Seeks Advice

Hello everybody, I hope everybody's doing okay. I'm a former Navy BT who never lost his passion of fighting fires. I was a qualified Burnerman on the AOR class of ship, the USS Kalamazoo (AOR 6), who has been seriously considering getting into the firefighting scene. I miss those days of practicing it, but do realize it is quite different when dealing with civilian firefighting.

That was in 1991-1995 that I was a Boiler Technician. What are the requirements for me to be able to take the exams to become a Firefighter? I am currently residing in Richmond, Virginia.

Great job...I was on the U.S.S. Kansas City AOR-3 as a Damage Controlman. I went into the Fire Service when I got out in 72. If you have the desire as you say you do...hang in there study and take any and every test you can. You will land some where and the rest is history. Congrats on your service to our Country and good luck in your endeavors.

Former Bosun's Mate USS Seattle (AOE-3), I like you got the bug while in the Navy after I got out I got started out as a Part time FF at my local dept. In Ohio,then went full time....like the advice already given...test often and test well!!!! go to your local bookstore and buy a copy of a fire department entrance test study guide it will help with the basics!!!. and get you EMT at least. :D

How old are you? If you get your classes through the vollie house, the federal fire might be the way to go.

I was on the Seattle from 87-89 the got out....she was my 2d ship having spent the first 3 years on USS Puget Sound (AD-38).

Okay, sounds good to me, but...

1. What about a place to live? I've been approved 2 times (1 in Ohio, 1 here in Richmond) for an apartment, but couldn't get it due to lack of income.

2. Transportation...I don't have a car of my own, though my Ohio Driver's License is still valid until 2008.

I'd probably be able to rent a car for the trip up there, but I've got to find some temporary work down here until then. I've recently went as far as applying at the Richmond Police Department, and at City Hall for an Administrative Assistant position.

FFJason02...where at in GA? What are the hours like on the Dept?

Kobersteen...what are the living arrangements like up there, as far as apartments? And what are the hours like on the Department?
