I recently applied to the FDNY over the phone. I was wondering if anyone might now how long it is going to take for them to give me a call to set up a interview. This is my dream job but if I need to I will find another EMT job on a private sector during the time. Let me know.

I honestly don't know how long it would take, but from what I here it's hard to get on at times. I would recommend getting another job close by and racking up the expierence and keep trying until you get your dream job. Experience is usually something that will really excel you in the hiring process.
But this is just my own opinion of course.

If you can't get on as an EMT, I suggest working for one of the many private agencies in the tri-state area. When you start getting some practical experience, apply to and complete a paramedic program. There are a few in the area that are pretty good.
In the meantime, try to get to know some FDNY medics, both EMTs and Paramedics. You'll find that a good number of them are just itching to make the move over to the fire side. Why? In FDNY, the lateral from Paramedic to buck firefighter is considered a 'promotion.' If you're looking to make a career out of working for FDNY, you're going to have to consider being a firefighter if you ever want to make a decent living and have any chance of significant promotion.
FDNY is not the sole provider of EMS in NYC. Search around and you'll find many other agencies that may be looking for good EMTs/Paramedics. Some will even offer higher pay and better working conditions.
Good luck with your job search and bravo for still believing EMS is a 'dream job.'
DISCLAIMER: I have never worked for FDNY. Some friends of mine still do. I bailed out of NYC many many moons ago.
