I'm behind on your path, but I'm thinking of taking Paramedic School at a hospital. Some of them require prerequisite classes on top of the EMT-B class, whereas some teach you the classes you need, on top of what else you need to know.

Check your local hospital website.

Wait. Wait at least a year hopefully more before taking a paramedic course! please wait. Ive seen so many green emt's go straight into medic class and are great at the book work but fail at skills since they do not have the field experience necessary to do well as a medic. But I guess in the end it's your money and time.

"what else do i need to become one??"

Please go out and become a solid basic first. I have trained many Paramedics either as a Preceptor in a formal program or by just getting a new partner. The single biggest problem I see again and again is Paramedic students who I only have for a few hundred hours and my partner and I have to get them up the solid basic level first. I do not have enough time to make a good Medic as it is. If we have to spend the first 2-300 hundred hours getting you comfortable with scenes, we cant spend that time working on the big picture of the call and learning to 'think'.
I have met a few students who were really gifted and could make the jump quickly but right now I can only think of two of them (they were women by the way).

What is your goal? To become a career paramedic? Or to get into medical school?

My point is, if you plan on making EMS a career, you might want to hold off on going to paramedic school until you've gotten some practical experience in the field as an EMT. You will find that with some real world experience, your time in paramedic school will be easier and more fulfilling. Also, a good paramedic is a good EMT first. If you have no real idea of what good BLS care is, your ALS care is going to suffer. Imagine worrying about starting an IV and pushing meds if you don't know how to manage a BLS airway!

If you're trying to get into medical school, go ahead and go to paramedic school. On a resume/application, a paramedic looks like a paramedic. That being said, beware of admissions officers that know the difference between a resume builder and a real paramedic. A few of my friends were burned when they applied to PA school and were exposed as 'resume builder' EMTs/paramedics. [resume builder = EMT/paramedic with no experience]

good luck to you.

I agree with what was said above. If you just got your basic, wait a little while and develope your skills. I got my basic back in '02. And I just signed up to take the EMT-I course.
