Must be the day for big fires.
St. Louis
TWO MASSIVES FIRES NOW CRIME SCENES
The sites of two massive fires in south St. Louis are now crime scenes. A fire on 18th Street completely destroyed the Vail Place townhomes and condos that were under construction. Two blocks over at the Mississippi Place condos, much of the same happened for those residential and commercial units, also under construction. The developer says it's been a 100% union project that was on time and on schedule and he doesn't see why anyone would want to burn the development down. No one was hurt at this point, and it is not known how the fires started.
Chicago
CHICAGO -- Emergency crews are still fighting an industrial fire in the near West suburb of Bellwood at this hour. At least five people have been injured in the blaze.
The fire is burning at 25th Avenue and Madison Street. Listed at that address is a factory called Universal Form Clamp Company. The company works with concrete-forming equipment and some construction chemicals, NBC5's Anita Padilla reported.
The fire apparently started around 9:17 a.m., when people in the factory heard some kind of explosion. Officials are not sure of the cause.
Officials have called a Level 2 hazmat situation, which mean the incident involves a severe hazard or hazard to a large area which poses threat to life or property and could require evacuation of the area, and a 5-11 alarm. Fifteen area fire departments have converged on the scene to fight the blaze.
Fire crews were spraying foam on the fire because they're not sure what kind of chemical they are dealing with, Padilla reported.
Four people were transported to Loyola Hospital with burns. One person suffered second-degree burns, and a second had third-degree burns. A fifth person was also injured. The extent of the remaining victims' injuries was not released.
Padilla said she had not seen any evacuations from the surrounding industrial buildings or homes.
