I agree with Bullitt and the French Connection.
Today, Gone in 60 seconds has some sweet chase action too, and Ronin was a favorite of mine.

I forget which Dirty Harry movie.... but I loved the chase where they're being pursued by a high-speed R/C car (which is also a bomb).

It was Dead Pool. That was pretty good but my favorites have to be,
Smokey and the Bandit and,
Cannonball Run

I like the final chase of "Gone in 60 Seconds". But it just hurts to see that sweet Mustang get so tore up.
What about Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Millenium Falcon being chased through the Death Star (I know, not really a car, but still a great scene, and yes I know my nerd is showing)
Other honorable mention: Blues Brothers, any random episode of Dukes of Hazzard.
And BTW: Post 100, one small step for mankind, one giant leap for ME!

Duh again.....Second version of The Getaway with Alec Baldwin and Kim Besinger has a pretty good chase scene with lots of gun fire.
PLUS- Kim gets very nude a couple of times. Worth seeing. :)

Then I can't believe you wouldnt put the original "Gone in 60 Seconds"
http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/25/99/45m.jpg
With a 38 minute chase scene in a movie that is 98 minutes long, I think it is worth noting. Many of the chase scenes were filmed in Buffalo on what is now the 190 and 290.

Here's another film that's worth mentioning....
"Vanishing Point"...
From www.idmb.com
Kowalski, the hero of the story, works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to Frisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul - a blind DJ with a police radio scanner. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike, lots of Mopar and you've got a great cult hit from the early 70's.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.
Keep your foot hard on the pedal. Son, never mind them brakes.
Let it all hang out 'cause we got a run to make.
The boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there's beer in Texarcana.
And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.
Ol' Smokey's got them ears on and he's hot on your trail.
He aint gonna rest 'til you're in jail.
So you got to dodge 'im and you got to duck 'im,
you got to keep that diesel truckin'.
Just put that hammer down and give it hell.
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.
Smokey and the Bandit is up there too, and I have to agree with Bou, the whole movie was a chase scene.
Not a movie but anyone else remember Hardcastle & McCormack? The Coyote? Nice. Was on right after the Hogan's Heroes Power Hour growing up.

Ahh Bou, thanks for posting the Bullitt scene. I was about to go out and rent it again.
That definitely has the best of the best. Two Iconic American cars (Mustang and Charger), absolutley no cheesy one-liners (in fact no dialogue at all), just pure driving. More legitimate rubber laid per mile, through plenty of hills and highway, and a good blow-up in the end.
And no special effects like most of the digital crap these days. You know both those cars handle like crap (by today's standards anyway), but those guys drive the piss out of them. They make San Fran look like Taledega.
And San Fran has got to be the best car chase city in the world. How many great scenes have been filmed on those hills? ;) :D
MalahatTwo7
06-09-2006, 10:50 AM
One thing I notice is that while SF must certainly be the most car chase filmed city in the world, why wont/dont they use the middle part of Lombard St? ;) With more twists and turns on a downhill slope than any other in the world (so it's said) what more fun could there be?
I've driven that piece with a (then new) 1993 Chevy Blazer full of drunk sailors....... fortunately no one lost his lunch on that run. :D

I'm going to have to side with the French Connection.
http://www.filmsite.org/posters/fren.jpg
For one it was shot in Brooklyn...two everything you saw was real...no stunt men (other than the driver) and no trick shots...they just raced up and down under the el. The accident that occurs at 86th and Stillwell Ave. is the real deal...that was a civilian they hit while running a red light.
Then Bullitt is the next runner up....

Well, if youre like me, you may have caught Mr. and Mrs. Smith on cable/satelite.
The car chase scene is pretty good with the 3 BMWs and the Mini (Mommy) Van. Lots of gun fire and Angelina Jolie looks pretty fine too.
No video yet to share. :(

I'm kinda partial to the chase scene in the older "Running Scared" with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal- where they are chasing a limo through Chicago and wind up on the "El" tracks........... Plus one of the greatest movie lines of all times happens during that scene:
"Try not to rub that third rail, there's a lot of volts in there...."
"do YOU wanna drive, smart ass? Besides, it's not the volts that gets you, it's the amps!"
