If everyone got out of this unhurt then they are very very very lucky. At the end of the video is a very slow replay and you can see how close the camera guy came to meeting his maker.

Yep, thats on another thread on the forums here. We just saw this last month in a training session put on by the one and only Weruj1. The guy goes to throw the flare into the basement window and KAPOW. I believe that 5 were injured. 2 seriously I believe....I could be wrong. There's more to the story than that....I just cant remember it all.....I'm sure that Weruj or someone else has more info.

Maybe I'm just being stupid, but does anybody know what exactly caused the explosion?

They dumped a bunch of gas in the structure to get it going.
I wonder when they first said oh, that wasn't a good idea

My guess is that they dumped a lot of fuel and the vapors settled on the first floor, but for the entire building to essentially get blown into oblivion they must have used a lot of fuel, i think one of the post on the actual website suggest the same. There isn't alot of evidence in the video as to what really happened so i am only speculating. Pretty scary though, I mean they really would have needed to use a lot of fuel to get that large of an explosion and even then it doesn't seem like fuel alone would explode like that.

Wow. That was intense. I hope those injured FFs recover soon and are able to return to work. It's horrible to see something like this video but one silver lining is that others may use it to prevent something similar from happening in the future. Good luck and speedy recovery to those involved.

Halloooooo.

firefighters HAD to have poured copious amounts of flamable material inside, well before throwing the torch.

firefighters HAD to have worked out it was going to be a big fire.

firefighters HAD to have decided, "Duh, We gonna BLOW THIS PLACE UP".

firefighters HAD to have worked out SOMEWHERE, in the dim dark recesses of their LOW IQ, "This could be big".

Notice the complete LACK of capitals in reference to these firefighters, because right up to the guy with the white hat "THEY AIN'T"

Can you guys imagine how much volatilization of that gas had taken place in the time that they fiddled around before lighting it? Good night, the place had to be permeated with fumes!

Even under 1403, why would anybody "help" a fire that much?

According to the first thread about this video (http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php?t=79359&page=2&pp=20&highlight=5+gallons) , someone poured it with 5 gallons of gasoline and 55 gallons of diesel fuel.

they probably should have thrown some sweaty dynamite in there to! I'm not sure of the date so this may be an old video. I really hope that no one died or is permanently injured. Can you imagine at your next training fire if the T.O. pulls up with a 50 gallon drum and starts pouring it everywhere.

Yeah, they definatly had some Class B fuel and the vapors collected in the basement I believe. I also believe that all FF's recovered, not sure if they returned to duty or what however. :(

Just remember folks...

The boom didn't come from the 55 gallons of diesel.

It was the 5 gallons of gasoline that would've done it.

Editing this to add:

Not that I'd recommend 55 gallons of diesel, either. That was way overkill even for a demolition burn.
