View Full Version : Seizures a showstopper?

I'm thinking of becoming an EMT. I need some insight before I take the first steps though. I have seizures that are controlled with meds. I haven't had a seizure in a month in a half. I can't drive now but if the goodness continues I should be able to in a few more months. The meds affect my memory a little bit but nothing that's all that bad. Just little things here and there. Will I be able to have any type of career with these things in my life or am I just a wee bit in crazy land?

To be honest, it might depend alot of the services around you. I'd talk to your doctor and see what s/he says about this. They might be able to run some tests and see what happens. As for the meds, it might limit how long you work or something. You can try and see what happens. I hope it works out for you.

I'd also suggest looking into the requirements for your area. Some require a physical exam prior to allowing you to be licensed/certified. Find out what is expected of you before you enter the class so you can plan for it.

Good luck to you.

Working in the ER as a tech might be an option. There are lots of places you can work besides on a truck.

I fully agree with U2ForNow. It would depend on what triggers them, but i gather that info is unknown. Our working envirment is unpredictable at best and you could put your own life in serious danger not to mention your Pt's and crew members. In south africa you need a profesional driving permit which foryou would be extremly difficult for you to get. See what pollicies your goverment has. Imagine this ,you are driving on a highway at 160 kmh and you have a generalised seizure. It could be tickets for many people.

I am not trying to discourage you at all, your willingness is trully welcome. Do futher research into your limitations and try over come them.

I wish you the all the best and if you are ever in my neck of world, you are more than welcome on my bus!!!!
