New Study Ranks Nation's Safest Driving City
POSTED: 9:11 am EDT May 24, 2006
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Motorists in Sioux Falls are the safest in the nation, and Midwest cities account for half of those in the top 10.
That's according to a new study by Allstate Insurance. The company calculated the chance that drivers in 200 of the nation's most populated cities would be involved in an accident.
Sioux Falls motorists average an accident once every 14.3 years -- 30 percent better than the national rate of one every 10 years.
Police Chief Doug Barthel said he's not surprised, as drivers in his community of 137,000 residents are courteous and respectful of others.
Phoenix drivers were ranked second in the nation when it comes to road rage. Now a new study ranks Phoenix drivers among the safest. The study by Allstate Insurance found the accident rate for Phoenix drivers the lowest among the nation's nine largest cities.
This is the second year for the study, and the second time that Phoenix came in first among cities with more than 1 million in population.
Phoenix drivers average just one accident every 9.7 years.
The study said motorists in Newark, N.J., are most at risk, with an accident once every five years.
Researchers with Allstate analyzed two years of internal crash data for the study. The company claims a 12 percent market share of the nation's auto insurance policies.
