Im an EMT-B from Atlantic County NJ. I run with a fully volunteer service: Egg Harbor City Police Volunteer Ambulance Service.I am 18 years old and I have spent 5 years with the squad and I have been running for two. My first year I ran as a third (we have a 'junior member' program where people 16yo with CPR Pro and First Aid can ride with us and observe), and went to EMT school in the fall. That January I got my EMT cert but due to insurance, I had to wait until my 18th birthday to be able to ride alone.
Besides EMS I am a member of the Civil Air Patrol for five years and I do Search and Rescue with them. Being an EMT I wound up getting my own field gear and I am a 'medic' with them. My future is that I leaving for the US Army this September. Once I finish basic I will being going to Fort Sam Huston for 68W or Medic. I then hope to go on to Airborne or Ranger.
Once again, Hello.

Umm...
It doesn't have anything to do with insurance. A Patient Care Report is a legal document, and your signature isn't binding until you are 18...
In PA, as a Minor, you can be certified and do everything as an EMT, except be the primary provider or Drive ANY Vehicle. - this is from the Child Labor Laws.
Welcome.

Well the thing is he is in jersey and we have some of the most screwed up insurance rules around IMHO. In atlantic county they are covered by JIF (joint insurance fund), JIF does not allow many things that may not be illegal. However they will not cover you if you do something that they do not like. Such as put a minor in the back of an ambulance with a patient by themselves, probably something to do with "what happens if something goes wrong with the patient, what kind of liabilty is there". So anyway the kid is right, it is insurance that kept him out of the back by himself.

Ya, My squad called JIF a few times to get the exact wording since we were hurting for EMTs for a while and me and my friend were it. We were both underage by a few months and they tried to see if it was "Person 18yo or older" or "EMT 18yo or older." It was EMT 18yo or older so we still got screwed for calls.
All those problems have been fixed and I hold the record for calls run in my squad so far. I had my well being 'threatened' that I am not allowed to get a job so that I will be around to catch calls from 6am-6pm. They warned me that when I turned 18 I was theirs...
